MBOSCers,Are you already looking forward to fun times at the 2019 Old Cabin Classic and Old Growth Classic? We sure are! And that's why we are very excited to announce the dates for next year's races!
Old Cabin Classic is our exciting cross-country mountain bike race in Wilder Ranch State Park, and Old Growth Classic is an amazing weekend campout and gravel race in Big Basin Redwoods State Park. Both events provide festival environments with live music, delicious food, refreshing beverages, and more! And to top it off, they're both held as benefits for State Parks, so while you're having a good time, you're helping to do some good too! What's better than that?!
We can't wait to see you at the races next year!

We are breaking ground today on the West Engelsmans Reroute project! MBOSC is partnering with the Santa Cruz District State Parks Trails Crew on the construction of this project, which will bring you bring you 5,500 feet of new trail while getting rid of the existing steep, rutted fire road. Over the next couple of weeks, we have some drop-in trailwork opportunities. Join us to help get this project started!
The MBOSC Trail Academy is in full swing with classes 101, 102, and 103 in the books, and 104 on the horizon. Nearly 40 students joined us last Saturday on the Pogonip Nature Loop to build a new trail reroute and decommission an old Trail. Students learned about fine flagging, clearing, constructing, and renaturalizing a new trail by hand. The Pogonip Nature Loop is a pedestrian-only trail located in the Pogonip Open Space Preserve, a City of Santa Cruz Property. Thank you to everyone who joined us!
"The Trail academy 103 class was epic, fun, and very informative. It taught me specific skills on how to use each tool, and gave me guidance on how to approach all the random features and scenories you come in contact with when building a trail. This was more than a class, it was a group of adventurous awesome people coming together to create a place for others to experience nature."
-Nicola Hopwood, Trail Academy Student
Our upcoming 104: Basic Trail Construction - Machine Finish course on November 17 is going to be exciting! It will take place on the new West Engelsmans reroute project and will offer participants insight into new trail construction; something one doesn't get to witness often. If you're keen to participate, but haven't taken the pre-requisites, 101 and 102, please fill out our handy Missed-a-Class form and let us know you're eager to sign up!
Dig Days are our premiere volunteer trail work events! Every year, beginning in the fall and running into the spring, we host a number of volunteer work days to tune up our local trails. MBOSC works in Wilder Ranch State Park, Soquel Demonstration State Forest, DeLaveaga Park, and Pogonip Open Space Preserve.
Each Dig Day is sponsored by a local business and hosted by MBOSC. Dig Days generally run from 8:45 am– 3:30 pm and include coffee from Verve Coffee Roasters, breakfast treats, a hearty lunch from New Leaf Community Markets, post-work refreshments from New Bohemia Brewing, and a volunteer raffle. We get a lot of work done but also leave time for socializing and basking in the glow of a job well done.
We look forward to diggind with you this season!
