Jan 7-10, 2019 Weekly Trail and Ride Report

This graphic pretty much sums it up, we may get a small break Monday followed by another big dose of rain.

I'm going to go hit a few gravel roads tomorrow just to keep my fitness up and get outside for a bit. Will probably do some rain hikes and pick up litter along the way. How about you?

Photos and reports are always appreciated.

It's part of my routine. I do one ride a week where I scout for trail trash. You would be amazed at some of the weird shit I've picked up.

What do you stash the trash in while riding? Just a plastic bag tied somewhere?

Trash bag in an old backpack. I also carry an empty plastic drink bottle for anything sharp I find.

Yeah, I was going to follow up with a question about “biohazard” situations, but then I realized I wasn’t going to deal with that anyway. I’ll pick up broken beer bottles (not without some choice language) but used condoms and any other items with people juices are a no-go.

For biohazard stuff it's best to call a ranger as it should be disposed of correctly.

flick dog poop off the trails is another good wet weather hiking activity, because apparently on small single track / no dogs allowed trails owners can't keep track of their off leash dogs to at least move the shit off the center of the trail.

How messy is St Joe’s? I’m gonna take my bike into the shop for a warranty repair on the dropper seatpost. Thinking to get a quick ride in on St. Joe’s before I do so, but not if that means I’ll have to wash the bike afterward.

I think by the afternoon, it will be pretty good. I did a bunch of puddle draining there.

Don't worry, I was hiking (so not to be profiled) by the trail pohlice.

Overgrown too is good since it is steeper and rockier.

It will be one of the few, few trail areas that will be rideable today in the South Bay

Here's the Soquel Demo rain guage. It's a good guide for the Santa Cruz area trails.

This has been a tough stretch. Can't even get on my roadie or trainer since my back hurts.

Will try to do something today. Forecast is still gnarly so gotta take the windows.

Work has conspired against me all week, but I just may see a little bit of a window today. I got the lights charging right now in case I got a bit long. Excited!

Took a late lunch to capitalize on the weather. Rode a little over 11 miles. Mostly dirt and explored some new stuff. Weather was beautiful, but the dirt resembled something more like brown sponge cake. I stayed off all "real" trails.

Little monument on a hill I had never been to the top of:

Rode a few laps on this newly discovered pirate pump track. Its small and needs some love, but hey its 1/4 mile from my house!

Jan 7-10, 2019 Weekly Trail and Ride Report-2-pump-track.jpg

Got home and inspected the damage, it actually wasn't as bad as I expected, but still the GBEMC took a mud bath. I cleaned it all up before it was placed back in the garage.

Grabbed some "real" lunch and now am back at work, bah! The weather forecast for the next week looks TERRIBLE ....

JNT lived up to is reputation. It was very ridable this afternoon. Most of the soggy spots were on the fire road coming from Black Rd. There was one small tree down on the trail near the bottom.

Rode my singlespeed "road bike" around Lake Natoma today. I rode some of the dirt trails on the southern side and for the most part, it was hero dirt. There were some peanut butter sections and large puddles so I stayed on the paved sections for most of my ride. I would imagine that the Folsom Lake trails are in the same condition. It was also a great time to try out the new absoluteblack oval ring before the rain hits again .Jan 7-10, 2019 Weekly Trail and Ride Report-20190110_1925161.jpg
