Jan 4-6, 2019 Weekend Ride and Trail Conditions Report

Here comes the rain again. For most of NorCal some pretty good accumulation over the next few days.

I rode 5 out of the previous 6 days in Santa Cruz and it is just starting to show a hint of dustiness in places. This rain is right on time!

    Ummmmm, no.

It could come on Monday and that would be good.

Or it can come in 30 days and we would still have stellar conditions. It doesn't get warm enough or direct sun/wind to dry it out.

Buuuuuut of course, California needs rain. Lots of it. We've fallen behind now.

I got out today for 2.5 hrs. First ride of the year. It was a little chilly but not too bad. Trails are drying out...actually they were pretty fun. Best of all, I didn’t see one e-bike...now that’s a great ride

I got out for an hour today before the rains. I saw 2 ebikes and 2 trail gnomes building North Shore jumps in undisclosed locations.

Had an interesting day! Saw a 2015 Bucksaw 2 on Craigslist. Made arrangements to check it and walked out with a new (to me) bike. Took it home did some routine stuff to it then told my son to get in the truck! Did 8 miles at Lagoon Valley then drove back home and thought, “Well I should try out the Bucksaw!” Got on my local trail and did an abbreviated loop for 6 miles.

Chasing the last bit of light and got chatted up by a few people (fat bikes get all the attention . Freaking climbs like a goat, much better than my Farley Ex 8. It’s lighter so caught some unexpected pop off the lips of the drops. Good stuff! Oh conditions were actually pretty good. A few watch out spots from the cows but totally rideable right now.

Of course that will all change starting tomorrow, boooo!

Crockett was cold, breezy, & sunny. Trails are drying in the sun & wind, but very fun. A few wet spots near the parking lot & on Tree Frog.

Cattle have trampled the top of Sugar City since I was there last. Bike traffic has smoothed it a bit.

For those keeping score, only saw 2 fireroad climbers headed for Tree Frog. The Goobers (Tree Frog climbers) were 7! Pretty sure my buddy & I were the only Sugar City Goobers. :-)

Jeni and I snuck in a ride in Auburn JUST before the rain started. We parked up at Foresthill Divide Loop and jumped in at Connector then rode all the way down to Confluence. Then she took my ebike and rode up Clementine and backtracked Connector to get the truck. She's training, not me. Although the rain started and I was getting wet as the wind whipped the rain under the picnic table shelter thing at the kiosk. She made it back to the truck before the rain really kicked in.

Connector, Culvert and Confluence were perfect. So much grip and only a couple of barely wet spots.

I did some heavy lifting on a new “backbone” loop. Had to clear the trail corridor and move a HUGE oak tree that look liked got hit with a missle (maybe lightning). Massive limbs down everywhere criss crossing where I wanted to take the trail. Initially thought I would have to reroute, but I put on some death metal and just got aggro. 30 mins later a clear corridor. My back is going to hate me tomorrow as I had a few “Hulk” moments. I should’ve got a picture but didn’t.

This loop will have several other mini-loop spinoffs. Thinking the complete system will be a ~7-8 mile addition. The initial loop I am working on adds 5 miles to my overall system. So looking at almost 15 miles in

More so in the mountains, windy, rainy, and branchy. You can see the remains of the picnic table on the deck.

Thanks man. I got home and didn’t care about the Texans / Colts so figured I could get a ride in before the Seahawks ( GO HAWKS!) game.

I rode the shortest loop possible on the new trail (~4 miles). I GoPro’d it so I’ll try to grab a video of any section that looks good on the files. I kept checkining the lens and kept finding it muddied up, so lol we’ll see.

Actually those water droplets give an interesting effect. There's a lens I use called a LensBaby that renders a similar distortion.

There was a weather window this morning. Lasted about 30 minutes.

At least there's snow for the resorts. Oh they're mostly closed with 100mph breeze.

Wanted to ride despite the weather. Decided to not risk damaging my trails so rode strips of dirt between roads and parks. I actually had a lot of fun and explored a few newer areas (for me). Managed to stumble across a pretty newly built renegade pump track right in the middle of an expansive park. Awesome!!

Finished up at over 10 miles right about the time I was getting weary of being soaked and cold. Probably 60% dirt so I’ll take it! If it wasn’t wet I could probably get that number closer to 80%.

On a side note, this ride got me thinking about planning out a “master route” that could connect existing trails and parks in my area and probably end up at 30-40 miles of predominantly single track / dirt if one way shuttled. If you did it as an out and back : loop it would be 70 miles + solid. I’m going to have to start thinking seriously about how to get it done! Might even be worth approaching the city about it at some point if it comes together as well as I think it could. Could be a huge draw for local businesses and the city for recreation.

Theres a couple good "mixed terrain" threads around here worth taking a look at. Rainy days were made for plotting out those kind of routes.

Today, go for a hike and take a picture of criks and water flow. Observe water flow and divert it away from the trail as efficiently as possible.

Bringa saw and a small shovel. Take out blocking debris. Free any trapped water!!!
