Jan 14-17, 2019 Weekday Ride and Trail Report

Looks like rain will be on/off all week. Where are the windows and trails to get some rides in? Trail reports and photos are appreciated.

Next weekend there should be some great riding weather and temps.

Dawn patrolled a Lagoon Valley full loop included the DH. Butcher Road side is perfect right now. Hamburger Hill is perfect. Once you hit the green gate the cows have pretty much ****ed everything up on the way up (except for the road) and on the way down. I would not bother again in the current state until it has dried out and the cows are out.

We also saw a few baby cows which means the Mom's aggression goes up a lot so be careful out there if you do get around the bovines!

I rode Annadel both Saturday and Sunday. Canyon-marsh-northern ridge-south burma-north burma-rough go-various off piste trails. Marsh was a little soggy at the bottom and top - clean in the middle. Ridge was moderately wet. South Burma near buick meadow was a little wet. Climb to top of south Burma was rugged but not too wet. Woody secret trails were killer, but watch out for fallen trees. Tree down on north Burma right after the rocky short downhill section. Top of rough go was one of the wettest spots. Middle to bottom was in great condition. Had new tires on, but notwithstanding, traction was pretty darn good.

Made it out to Joaquin Miller around 10am and rode for about an hour. It was lightly raining on my drive out but stopped during my ride. A little slick in some spots but overall was fine. Saw a few other riders in the parking lot and some groups of hikers with dogs.

First time there and I canít wait to go back.

Conditions were like this or a little more dry depending on the trail.

Snuck out to Fox in Scotts Valley during lunch to pick up something. Traffic apocalypto in the light rain.

Cars hit the wall in both directions on the first descents after the hill. Look at all those car parts by the wallJan 14-17, 2019 Weekday Ride and Trail Report-img_1877.jpg

Rode Skeggs this afternoon. Windy and cold with some rain thrown in. Dirt was great on most trails I rode. Rained mid ride so things got a little wetter but not enough to puddle.

Kennedy will be rideable imho. The rocky steeps are sturdy. Might be windy as heck though.

I almost went for it this morning, but I didn't get very good sleep last night and the allure of a lazy / slow morning in bed before work won out! As I look out my office window right now, I regret that decision!

Iím thinking about heading north up to Bellingham. I graduated in Dec, and start work in Feb, so I want to get a cool trip in while I still have free time on my hands. But all my friends have work or school and donít want to come with me... hmmmm, I guess we may have to go solo.

Saturday looks to have no rain, but assume everything will be way oversaturated?

I have a ton of work to do, so this rain has actually been a blessing for me. If it wasn't for my procrastination, I might actually be close to done.

Local knowledge and ride reports from everyone will be critical in the next 7 days. Two things to note are mud and trail damage/blockage from water and fallen trees.

In the South Bay, St. Joes and Kennedy, John Nicholas will be the first to clear up. since they are made of rock underneath and have good drainage. Ford Ord in Monterey is good since its mostly sand.

Let's not rush to our favorite trails and risk ruining them for a while.

Hiking is good to scope out the areas. Bring a saw and a small shovel these first few outings to help clear everything.

This WAS a big one with water and wind.

Not a lot of rain in Monterey. Fort Ord will be good for the most part, a few puddles in areas.

Demo Forest rain page. This applies to a lot of Santa Cruz Mountains.

    https://soquel.westernweathergroup.com/

Guideline is let it rest 1 day for every inch of rain. So current estimate is let it rest for 6 days after it stops raining?Jan 14-17, 2019 Weekday Ride and Trail Report-screen-shot-2019-01-17-8.39.09-am.jpg

For east-of-SAC commuters: Last night there was a tree down on the Lake Natoma paved trail, in the section east of Nimbus along US50, between the lagoon bridge and the Folsom Road ramps. Could be bypassed on the dog-walking / MTB path if you don't mind fording some puddles.

I should have gotten on here and posted this last night. It's right at the bottom of a little rise and westbound you might come upon it quickly, that would be bad in the morning dark.

Lake Tahoe snow report is not as awesome as expected. 2 feet of snow fell earlier this week and then it rained and rained above 6000 feet even.

    https://www.sfgate.com/weather/artic...w-13541106.php

Hope they get some fresh snow before this massive system shuts down. Seek the highest, highest elevation might be the key for snow bunnies.

No ride yet this week. Playing pick-up-stick on foot on the local trails tomorrow morning will have to do. Also, congrats RBoardman on your graduation! Road trip sounds like an awesome way to spend the time off.

Sierra cement for sure. Snow level around 6000 now, wasn't quite full on snow in hot tub soak tonight. The Arbor will definitely get the nod over the Pivot tomorrow. Hopefully "powder" will be a good adjective to use tomorrow. Powder to the People!

Wow, with all due respect, you must really be desperate to get some to ride fremont older right after a rain like that.

I tried years ago after a three days dry period, and the bike wash after was as long as the ride.

I live right by the park and know its moods well. My hardtail has a cheap 10 speed drivetrain that is easy and affordable to replace.

All went good today. Trails were slick but not too bad under the forest canopy. Got all the gear we needed up there and even cleared out a couple bigger trees down on a few different trails with a battery powered chain saw we hauled up with us. Looks promising ahead!!
