Immediate MidPen Board Opening, Ward 7

On September 26, 2018, Director Cecily Harris representing Ward 7 announced her intention to resign from the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District (District) Board of Directors, effective October 11, 2018. Ward 7 includes the cities of El Granada, Half Moon Bay, Montara, Moss Beach, San Carlos, and portions of Redwood City and Woodside (Attachment 1). Due to Director Harris’s resignation, the Board of Directors (Board) needs to determine how to fill the remainder of her elected term, which expires in January of 2021.

Cecily Harris is resigning and moving to Minnesota. Certainly she could have announced her resignation in time to have Ward 7 on the November 2018 ballot. :-/

    So now, surprising no one...

Midpen board set to fill vacancy by appointment rather than election

    Published: 24 October 2018
Written by Los Altos Town Crier Staff - Special to the Town Crier

The Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District Board of Directors voted at a public meeting Oct. 10 to fill the remainder of Director Cecily Harris’s term by appointment rather than by calling a special election in San Mateo County, which would have cost taxpayers approximately $414,000.

Harris recently announced she was stepping down from the board, effective Oct. 11, to begin the next chapter of her life in Minnesota.

Local residents interested in applying for Harris’s seat must be registered voters residing in Ward 7, which includes El Granada, Half Moon Bay, Montara, Moss Beach, San Carlos and parts of Redwood City and Woodside. Applications are available at the Midpen Administrative Office at 330 Distel Circle, Los Altos, or online at openspace.org/ward7.

Applications are due by 5 p.m. Nov. 9. Interviews will take place in November, and the person appointed will hold office through Jan. 4, 2021.

The Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District is a public agency spanning parts of Santa Clara, San Mateo and Santa Cruz counties, with the mission of preserving, restoring and providing access to a regional greenbelt of open space. It is governed by seven publicly elected directors serving four-year terms. Harris was elected to the board in 2008 representing Ward 7 residents.

Two other Midpen board seats will appear on the Nov. 6 general election ballot. Local voters will decide who will replace retiring Ward 5 Director Nonette Hanko, representing the Palo Alto area, and who will represent Ward 1 in the South Bay area, a seat currently held by incumbent Pete Siemens.
