Hiker sentenced for sabotaging North Shore mountain bike trails

"Sixty-four-year-old Tineke Kraal of North Vancouver has been handed a suspended sentence and placed on three years' probation for sabotaging mountain bike trails. She will also have to serve 150 hours of community service.

Kraal was caught on camera placing branches and other obstacles across trails on Vancouver's North Shore. "

I'm very glad she got caught and hope this deters others from following her dangerous vandalizing of local trails.

..prosecutor Mark Myhre told the court Kraal ran a personal campaign for two years, spending up to two hours a day dragging dozens of logs and branches onto the North Shore trails
She'll end up spending less time in punishment than the time she invested in the crime. Her sentence is a joke.

That's true - but at the least this will go on her record and a second offense will not be so light.

I can't imagine waking at 4AM to try and injure people for 2 years. She must be one twisted person. She got lucky with the sentencing and this type of crime is difficult to punish. We are tracking several individuals logging a social trail here in Marin. Legal advice and sophisticated game cameras may bring them to justice but it entirely depends on land managers or the D.A. to pursue pressing charges.

This is typical liberal sentencing. I would love to have seen her actually get punished to the point that she was made an example of. I am so tired of bad people being let off the hook for their bad behavior. I live in Oakland, so it's kind of an issue I dwell on.

I know how you feel - people should be held accountable.

The main thing missing from the sentence, at least in this report, is a stay-off-the-trails injunction. For MV, who was enjoined from hiking "his" trails for a couple years, this was a big deal.

No need to go political. You weren't there to hear the whole story, neither was I, drawing such conclusions only shows you are willing to pass judgment on someone without knowledge. By the way, you know that the incarceration rate for young black males who live in Oakland is absurdly high, right? It's working really great for community safety, huh?

It seems to me like she's suffered enough as it is. Her husband's dying of cancer, she's been basically cooped up in her house since this started since the public backlash against her from all the publicity, and from what I can tell from one of the videos and descriptions on NSMB it sounds like one of her dogs may have been shot by the RCMP during her arrest (? - there's a video referencing a dog charging one of the cops which says "the officer was forced to defend himself").

I have as much contempt for these kinds of people as the next person here but honestly I think the MTB community here won a massive victory, thanks to the incredibly composed, calm and rational behavior of the two guys involved. Throwing a 65-yr old woman in jail wouldn't really do much. As it stands, she looks like a wacko and the MTBers look like fine upstanding law-abiding citizens. The media coverage in BC is pretty strong too.

Our elders get a lot of slack where this sort of thing is concerned fro any number of reasons. It is exactly why Mike V's consequent circumstance was mitigated to something lesser.

The two guys who found the traps, had the most direct involvement, and did all the legwork and actually caught her seem quite satisfied with the outcome so \_(ツ)_/

so from the news reports it seems she dragged some small logs and branches onto the trail, yes? No thin cable lines or roofing nails or pits covered with leaves. If thats the case then shrug, really not into punishing little old ladies for creating obstacles on MTB trail....I think the cops just telling her to stop would probably been enough.

It says that she never wanted anyone to get hurt; so if she is not smart enough to know that a biker running down at 15 or 20 is going to have a bad day then why is she allowed to back into public.

This is the trouble with the world today, it is legal to be stupid, so stupid that it can hurt others and property.

We need Stupid Camps, places these retards can live, work simple task to provide for them selves and be among their own kind. Give then a test once every 3 years to see if they can get out or not. The perks for them would be they would not have to pay taxes; mainly because they would not be allowed to earn anything other than what they need that day to live. Naturally no breeding either, stupid + stupid does not produce the best offspring.

I have seen folks come around a blind corner they have run many of times before and hit a fallen tree or placed brush and get really hurt. So when I see that someone got some justice or perhaps when they get caught on the spot and get messed up to the point that they feel helpless out in the bush and can not even beg then it brings a smile to my face. LOL

Maybe the best idea I've ever seen on mtbr. Once a week you could allow them to booze it up. And to make it more interesting give them Go Pros, some fireworks, tazers, mouse traps, and some gasoline.

    From an article on NSMB:

"It should be noted that, as mentioned above, comments made about and toward Mrs. Kraal on social media were seen as mitigating factors in her sentencing. Several of these, which included death threats, were read out in the courtroom. Comments like these have made me ashamed and surprised by the mountain bike community. While most of the comments have been respectful and reasonable, the vocal minority, often acting like thugs, has tainted all of us."

Food for thought when working towards greater access and dealing with those who would attempt to prevent such access. Current and past threads regarding specific anti-bike people in Marin come to mind.

I believe these places already exist, except the breeding part. Most major inner cities qualify. But they do allow pregnancy so that they can make a few extra bucks on the body parts.

Actually no, not in this thread. This thread is for unifying the brotherhood of Norcal cyclists.

After we take over the world we can start arguing among ourselves.
