Feb 11-14, 2019 Weekly Ride and Trail Report

Mixed bag of nuts for most of NorCal, a little rain, a little sun...repeat. Seems the heavy rain might be behind us now, so trails around MidPen and Santa Cruz should be looking good soon. How about other areas?

    Reports and photos appreciated.

Guys, don't forgot about Valentine's Day!

U-Conn is shredded after weekend traffic. Emma has the usual soft spots. They would probably be fine by Wednesday if not for the incoming rain.

I predict it will get wetter and then more heavy traffic next Saturday and it will be even worse next week.

Once it dries it will look exactly the same as it did 3 months ago. No work necessary.

John Nicholas usually holds up well to the rains. Yesterday afternoon was no exception. There were a few soft spots; mostly where the forest duff had accumulated and was holding moisture. I only found two small puddles of standing water.

It was colder at the top than I expected. Still some patches of snow sitting around.

Enjoy it now. Just like the grass on the California foothills, the moss only stays bright green for a few weeks. It will darken once it finishes its new growth spurt.

Rode big loop out of Creekside at Fort Ord today------north side trails in 90% good shape but the return on goat is getting iffy and this next storm should make it not a trail we should be on-----folks please do not go around all the puddles-just ride through them---folks are making the trails wider which none of us want.

I got to ride Fremont Older this afternoon!!! Not really muddy but.... holy shit, it's wet out there with water running everywhere. That place is crumbling in many places.

This next storm is going to be crushing for most trail systems if it delivers wind and rain as predicted.

Batten down the hatches. I just happened to check my basement sump pump and the cord was shorted. Fixed! Could have been a HUGE problem, waking up to a flooded basement.

Definitely was pissing overnight in the SC mountains. Old Santa Cruz Hwy has all it's standard puddle's and mini slides. Hopefully they stay mini.

Ground is so saturated, the additional rain is starting to make me a little nervous since my house sits on a mountain slope.

JNT has it's own little micro climate. There have been several times over the last couple years where at about mid mountain, it gets really cold and you start to see ice patches.

    Heck ya.

Waterfall hunting in the real world today.

Bonus with this tropical rain is it's not too cold deep in the woods.
