Feb 1-3, 2019 Weekend Ride and Trail Report

For much of NorCal there is a sliver of riding to be had Friday morning, then, RAIN! Looks like most of the weekend will be rain. The upside is, next week and weekend should be pretty awesome.

If you do get out, photos and reports are appreciated.

Local only. I'll ride the farm roads to hwy 113, ride the frontage roads, ride the tracks to the highway bridge to check on the young folks living under it, back across the field roads to home. when the rain starts, I've got over 25 stack laminated parts glued up and I will scrape and plane them smooth and neat. Then, I'll spend the rest of the weekend pacing like an unhappy zoo creature.

Great hike with the wife today. Yes, we have to do that too and I like hiking only a little less than mtb and backcountry skiing. We explored off trail in a new canyon in the Cache Creek recreation lands.

I'll be at the Shasta Ski Park on Tuesday to enjoy what is coming down this weekend. Max snow will fall around Lassen Park which will get 80 - 100 inches over three days. I've skied Shasta for years but haven't rode lifts since 2007 for skiing.

I got a full unlimited pass for the ski park this year. Since I'm over 70 and bought in the summer, it cost $49. THere is some good to getting old!

This year I'm not teleing at the resort - I'm working on my parallel that has gotten rusty over the last decade. T2's and Rossi BC 125s.

7.4 miles on my new stretch of local trails. Was thinking about wearing the GoPro before I left decided against it, bad call. It was awesome conditions! Now the rain will soften up the ground for the cows to do even more damage! Ughh.. Oh well I had a freakin blast. Hopefully it will get me through the weekend!

Two more "sub-loops" to map out that should bring the mileage up to over 8 miles. These 8 plus the other solid 9 already in = 17 miles right out might door, woot! Can't wait for the cows to get pulled so I can get the trails buffed up and ready to roll!

Rode UC yesterday and today before the rains. Its been cold and damp up there. The trails I rode were great but anything on the flatter side was swampy. Lots of standing water. Going to be bad after these rains.

stripped my primary ride down Friday, took my fork over to Fox in Watson for servicing, cleaned and packed fresh grease in head set bearings, pulled my crankarms/ BB and replaced/packed new bearings. Installed new cassette, chain rings and chain. Sometime this weekend I'm replacing brake pads, throwing both wheels in the truing stand. Should have my fork back sometime next week.
In the mean time if the possibility of a ride comes up I have back up hardtails, steel SS Jabber, Carbon hardtail S.C., steel 1X10 Salsa to go to if needed!

    The weekend rain is brutal!

    Cocktails
    Beer
    Watching some NCAA wrestling
Taking the common law to test drive the xc 60
Replacing the BB in the trail bike
    Maybe a road ride
Making some progress stripping down the ol' motor...

Saturday is ride day...so I went for a ride. Quite a few people out; trails were running good. Almost no mud, a few puddles, and some slick roots

Same here, today was a ride day, so I rode! I chose to ride the dirt next to streets and a few patches of single track around local parks that hold up well. 11 miles at 10 mph, Iíll take it!

Of course saw a moto hitting some of the gravel doubletrack I ride when it rains (posted as illegal for motos) and he had ****ed it up proper clearly roaching on top of every berm and little bump he could find. Why do Motos have to be such dicks for zero reason?

    SCM Rainy Day

Had the day off so decided to build a manual machine! Had been watching videos on these...Mr. Tonka's probably the best. Anyway, scrap wood - predrilled, countersunk, and glued and clamped (gonna survive the atom bomb). Works great first time out - my manual sucks arse and I found technique improvement right away (keep your back straight!).

Also replaced my rear Shimano XT8000 two piston caliper with a new XT8020 quad (basically the Saint with a different paint job) and a new rotor....super easy to do. Make sure to buy the 'banjo bolt' for the brake line cause they don't come with the caliper (....).

I destroyed my rotor and pads when I somehow got some gravel in the works on a bad down. I haven't been too happy with the 'Shimano fade' on the 8000's and since new pads are $30-40, decided to just go for the new caliper (comes with pads) = $113 delivered. Bedded in no problem.

Hoping to get down to Fort Ord Wednesday or Thursday this week.....

Trucker Co brake pads will save you some money, and I have been happy with them. Also a Zee is a repainted Saint, the quad piston XTís definitely have a different feel and less aggressive power.

Today I finished cleaning up an old moto & took for-sale photos. Its spoken for this evening, so it was a good rainy day.

Riding buddies are coming over tomorrow for grilled meat, 16yo Zaya, dessert first, and some Mtb youtubes. Maybe some Sophie Lloyd & Larkin Poe. :-)

NO watching stuperbowl allowed! Though we might tune-in Maroon 5 at halftime.

Did another non-trail dirt loop. Need to change up one section to avoid a double back. 11 miles @ 11 mph. Probably 50% dirt. I actually remembered to take pictures of the Moto damage on the pump track. Iíll fix it up later this week. All the colors were electric today in the sun!

Rainy Day Loop Part II. I rode the full loop this morning. My son had a few friends over and randomly asked me to take him and his friends on my rainy day loop. Ended up having to cut it short but it looked like they all had a blast. 8.3 miles including a few laps on the pump track and skills challenge concrete skinnies at a local park. High fives and smiles, Iíll take that! Super Bowl Shmuper Bowl!

Brian, you know that thing is too pretty to ride.

No riding this weekend. I hiked in a full on hail storm at John Nicholas yesterday and today I bought myself. B-Day present, a few days late.

Rained on hard both days. Couldn't feel fingers or toes. Didn't care.

Came up 1.2mi short of my weekly goal, that kinda bummed me out.

100% non-technical trails, but a hilariously fun wet weather loop of puddle-filled greasy mud (the good firm kind). That was some of the most fun I've ever had on a bike! Why didn't I try this 10 years earlier?! I guess resurrecting my Inbred as a rigid fixie helped me not worry about the price to pay in maintenance
