Just think, if you married Danica Patrick, you'd be Justin Danica Time. Sort of, but not really.

The FB post link is broken and the event is not listed on FB from what I can see. I bet he's working on the event page.

    Here's the info:

Friday, June 24 at 12 PM
    Packsaddle Campground
    Sierra City, California 96125

    Invited by Kyle Maxwell
You're invited to the best mountain bike campout of the summer. We're celebrating our 10th year getting riders together from all over the west coast for an epic weekend of camping, riding and serious folly and this year will be better than ever. We're again using the Packsaddle Campground as our basecamp of badness and will be site-sharing like in year's past, so don't worry if you dont have your own campsite. (They're all booked now anyway, but there are 5 available on F.C.F.S. basis.) The Brewing Lair will again be providing beer for the event.

Yeaaaaah! This is gonna be a good one too. I'll be seeing you guys up there on Saturday morning as my wife and I have some family obligations on Friday, but we expect to be there in the mornng on Sat and we'll be bringing more wood. woooo! Not sure how much riding I'll be doing as I have no idea if I'll have a bike together by then, or if I'll have to rent one.

    10th year? 2010 is "classic'?

Here's just one photo from the original "in spite of MTBR" Downieville gathering (2003!!/ Do the math people) that has subsequently been usurped by various nerdlets:

    No kidding.

Between no FB and the shingles epidemic, MTBR has seamlessly morphed into AARP!

This looks to be a cool trip and i would like to try to make this!
Can you give some basic info on the weekend?
Since every site is booked, do we just pitch a tent wherever we want - on someone else's camp site?
By the looks of some of the photo's there looks to be some evening shenanigans?
Is there scheduled stuff - rides etc going on throughout the weekend?
Just claim a piece of dirt, pitch a tent, eat what ya brung and drink everyone else's beer?
    Info please.......

    Thanks
    Dan

Without the discounts and member benefits. :/

Actually I'll be exercising my member benefits at this event. I'm going to raid fc's cooler at night and blame raccoons. I know he has some Pliny hidden somewhere.

From what I gather on the FB page yes to all of that except drink someone else's beer. That could get you killed. Or just wait till they go OTB on a pixie bike and then snag it.

If this is your first gathering, you must bring enough Pliny to keep everyone satisfied for the whole weekend.

    Message from k-max

Hey peeps! Sorry for the radio silence. Been verrrrrry busy with a house move and work work work. For those interested in attending and can't access the Facebook page, my apologies, Facebook does not allow switching between private to public settings once it's live. That said...

    GET YOUR ASS IN GEAR.

Because we want you there. If you've been, you know the drill. Just show up prepared. If you haven't, here's a primer:

We took over a campground at 6000' in the shadow of the Sierra Buttes. Packsaddle Campground. Pretty rad location. There's enough room for all of us. You will make friends fast when you need a piece of dirt to pitch your tent. Beer is valid currency in the mountains.

We bend the rules with numbers of people and cars. And the camp hosts are cool since we have proven our level of responsibility. We pay extra and keep the place clean. Good attitudes go a long way. Please help us continue that secret handshake and leave your belligerent friend and barky dog at home.

Firewood is also currency. So is ice.

We supply a few kegs of beer. We pay for it, so we will kindly ask for contributions.

We have been known to give away thousands of dollars in sweet gear. You will have to earn it. It may require blood.

Be prepared to ride some very remote chunk if you sign up for certain rides. And by sign up, I mean, you get talked into it over a drunken campfire conversation. Be ready to ride, hangover be damned.

Don't be the drunk dude that falls into the fire.

Also. Your voice travels far at 1 AM. Be considerate of the old So Cal crew. They get tired early. ;-)

Is that enough rules? You in? Oh, and we made some of these to hold your beer.

Downieville Gathering is almost here. June 24-26-2016_dville_gathering_10year_tallboy.jpg

Question on route from Bay Area. I always go through Auburn via hwy 49, or Colfax to hwy 49. Looking at map app, it seems going through Marysville may save substantial time. Any quick quips about Marysville route? Maybe as you pass along stoke about trip?

Marysville Rd. is a good way to connect 20 to 49. 174 is a good option but Marysville Rd. is more direct.

Always Marysville, on the way home back roads through Knights Landing and Zamora to the 505 cut out a lot of sitting in traffic on I80.

Waze is so good for this kind of back road traffic avoiding route finding in real time.

If folks are heading to Packers vs. Downieville proper I have found it much faster to head up 80 and then 89/49 - despite being 20 miles longer.

I was just up there two weekends in a row MTB classic downhill (1st weekend) and dirt bike riding (last weekend), camped at Packsaddle, great spot, leave it clean!

The top of Sunrise (MTB) was pretty snowed in, just a bit of hike a bike, not bad.

We had to turn the dirt bikes around at the top of Chimney Rock due to snow.

On the dirt bike/ohv weekend we did a bit of trail maintenance (cut/moved trees that fell across trails) so no-one would try to go around on Chimney Rock/Empire Creek.

Saw lots of shuttle vans full of MTBers. Seemed like a good vibe between the ohv riders and the mtb riders It was refreshing.,A few mtbers helped a fellow rider retrieve his moto 10-15' down the side of 3rd divide.

Bassets had breakfast and Packer Lodge decent food/bar.

What are the chances of joining ya'll last minute (on the MTB)?

Either way have a great time. I love that area.

Oh man, I think so. That next morning was rough. But the evening was worth it. We took over downtown that year, it was like a mini mardi gras, bike sumo in the middle of main street!

Well, I was thinking about hitting this gathering up, but it looks like I won't have a bike in time.

I took Steve's Stumpy to Sacramento yesterday for yet another repair (Brain shock needs to be sent in for service, brakes need to be bled, pads need replacing, chainring worn, needs a new chain) and when I got the estimate, I cracked. They take trade ins, and when he told me what they would give me for the bike, I took it and cut my losses. Fuk it. Edit: oh, yeah, it also needs a new bb.

Sorry Steve, but that was one of the dumbest, most expensive things I've ever bought.

    That sucks.

What about a rental? If I still had my spare Sight I would have let you borrow it. There will be plenty of fun even without rides. You should come anyway!

Excited and looking forward to finally making it to an MTBR Downieville gathering. The plan is to head up to the campsite Friday afternoon (work depending). Bringing proper campsite currency for a space to lay my tent.

Is there a tentative ride schedule? Do we need to make shuttle reservations with Yuba for Sat or Sun? I've ridden the standard Downiville downhill course but I'm looking forward to exploring some of the other trails in the area.

I don't believe there is any official large group ride plans, smaller groups of friends plan their own rides, if you need shuttles I would recommend booking with Yuba asap as they will sell out.

Is it verboten to bring firewood from another area, or is the cool thing to buy it local.

I'm not bringing my dog, I saw Dan's post about leaving barky dogs at home, and Endo does bark when she gets excited.

    Good to know!

We'll book an 11am shuttle on Saturday to hang with Captain Cobb. I guess the rest of the rides will be determined after beer.....

    Cool!

Jeni is trying to get us booked. It's weird trying to figure out shuttles when you are camped at the top. I guess you could always drive to town and just do normal shuttles.

Driving down to the bottom would be doing it wrong unless you plan to leave immediately after your second shuttle.

Just be sure to bring whatever you need to enjoy a dip in the river after the ride with you for the ride down.

We did that for one run but as the slots fill up fast it's not likely to work for subsequent runs after meeting folks at the camp. It's pretty easy to plan if you already know who you're riding with and when. It's a crap shoot otherwise.

Conditions and road report as of Wednesday:

The snow is gone from the classic Downieville Downhill trails: Sunrise (with a few trees down), Butcher, Pauly (water is at 18 inches) . Upper mountains have some snow at the ridgelines & summit. We have trail work planned for this Saturday to work on Big Boulder and 2nd Divide to elevate the radness. Get it!

    Road report:
Note on travelling to Downieville on 49 from Grass Valley or Marysville; There are 2 sections of road work that will add to your travel time on weekdays so plan accordingly.

    Downieville Trail Conditions and Information

And you can book shuttles on the website:

Just book your second for later in the afternoon, like 3-4ish. If you get down earlier you could grab a 6 pack and lounge in the river until it's time to head back up to camp.

‪#‎picklejuice‬ - Downieville happened again. I made it this year despite all odds and was stoked to see everyone. I was thinking if I didn't get to ride, it would be fine. But the riding was the best in history. The work on Sunrise, Upper Butcher and Butcher make it one of the best runs in the land. About 80 Mtbr friends were at the party at the campground but many more were in the area. Many, many companies donated raffle prizes at a moment's notice and we raised $1900 for the Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship. Thank you Kyle and Andy for making it happen.

Here's my only photo. . Man, that drive through Sacramento still sucks!!

What's up Brian? So cool to meet you man.

I was alone most of my shuttles and runs so I met some really good people. So much stoke.

Hey, you got a photo of my waterbottle. So dialed!!! My buddy asked what's inside and I said, there's a Dynaplug beer opener and a beer. While my buddies flat, I sit back, have a beer and watch.

Was that bear about halfway to 2/3 down Butcher? Didn't make the gathering but was heading down around 10:30-11:00 on Saturday and spotted a bear at that spot.

I missed the bear but on Sunday we almost ran down a doe and a fawn so tiny we both thought it was a rabbit chasing the doe down the trail ahead of us. Jeni yelled STRAVA! and was going to run them down.... KIDDING! We skid to a stop so the panicked baby could exit the trail instead of continuing to run ahead of us on crazy wobbly legs.

Oh yeah, what an adventure Saturday!!

After the usual flat, I ran into this guy sitting on upper 1st divide. I was coming in hot and spooked um when I slammed on the brakes and stopped. I was hoping he would run off after I stopped but, he just sat there. I chucked a rock and yelled to scare him off, it worked, so I got on the bike and then he walked back to where I found him. He wasn't moving outta the way.
At this point I was feeling pretty small. I figured I'll walk back slowly to get around a bend to head back to fellow riders, he started to walk towards me. At this point I kept chucking rocks to keep he back until my buddy Adam or another rider/riders showed up since I knew they're not too far back.
Downieville Gathering is almost here. June 24-26-img_6134.jpg

Pretty mind blowing when your alone and no large rocks or sticks around to look intimidating to a bear. Yeah, it was a little guy but, still big as me.
Once a group came up he took off. There was about 10 of us and this guy still sat on the side of the trail until we pasted by.
Downieville Gathering is almost here. June 24-26-img_6135.jpg

The bear seemed not too afraid of people. I think if I came at him full speed and screamed, he woulda ran off. Then it woulda been the next guys problem. I can say that it's pretty cool to finally see a bear in it's natural habitat. Plus, can you imagine my kids faces seeing Daddys pics of a bear.
I keep thinking what can be done different if it happened again.

    So good!!!

I have a Downieville hangover today. UC and Demo just aren't going to cut it after 3 straight days of shuttling Downieville with some fast guys! I think I need to go back up next weekend too.

So much fun riding, camping, eating, and drinking with so many great folks. Thanks to MTBR, Kmax, Andy, and all the sponsors for a fun event. I'll post up some pics of the loot that I won on Saturday night later.

We had several flats, destroyed tires, broken shifters, cracked frames, and broken cranksets in our group. I know I left some skin up there as well. Found several scrapes/cuts/bruises that I didn't know I had when I got a got home and showered last night.

Saw another shot of a broken carbon rim on a buddies FB feed today too. Lots of carnage up there.

Fuk yeah, good shots! I'll post some pics tomorrow.

Good times, good times. Nothing like D-ville, especially with a gathering to back it up.

Great photos ask! BTW, how was that pickle juice?

Jeni and I had a blast and we're already looking forward to next year. We met so many awesome people and there were so many more we want to meet but we're too tired and too shy to get around to it.

Thanks to everyone for making it such a wonderful event.

    Good fun until...

First gathering for me, came up with my dad and stepmom, brought along my wife Gina and dog Archie.

Thursday's lap went well until my left crank came off while pedaling down Lavezolla road, on top of that, my brakes pretty much stopped working.. got a ride out in the back of a forest service truck, those dudes haul some serious ass!
Downieville Gathering is almost here. June 24-26-img_4295.jpg

Friday I only got one run in, as in the morning I had to fix my crank and get my brakes bled. Later in the afternoon my dad was nice enough to shuttle my wife and I for 2 laps of Sunrise, my wife is still new to mountain bikes and had never ridden in Downieville, she did great!

Had some fun on the firing range we setup for the pellet guns...
Downieville Gathering is almost here. June 24-26-img_4343.jpg

Saturday I got 2 runs in, the morning run was fairly uneventful for me. However on the second run, I crashed on Butcher a little bit above where it joins into Pauly Creek. Went for a gap into rock garden line that I had done in the morning, but landed a little funny, couldn't save it and my front wheel went out from under me and sent me OTB, luckily I I avoided hitting the big rocks and felt mostly okay, if not just shaken up, cruised down the rest of the way to town. As the adrenaline wore off, things started to hurt more and more. got home and went to the ER, Somehow my left wrist isn't broken, even though it is telling me that it feels like it is. Bruised ribs, slightly swollen and discolored ankle, sore knee and messed up wrist.

Because I'm dumb and forgot to check the forum to see who I should be on the lookout for.

I wandered around on Friday trying to meet people but 90% of the people I talked to don't post on the forum or hadn't in 10yrs. After awhile it felt weird so I just hung out with the SoCal folks at campsite #1-2. After slamming beers and doing push-ups to avoid drinking pickle juice Saturday night I was beat. Talked to some cool folks then hit the sack. I should have just called out for Finchie after my victory! Man these goggles are sweet!

Man you didn't catch any breaks. Well you got shuttled up that terrible hill a couple of times so that counts! 1000' gain over 2.5miles is no joke. Haha

Heal up fast man. I need you to film yourself going through the waterfall with speed so I can learn how.

    I'll play too....

Downieville holds a special place in my heart, I have been up there every weekend but one since the shuttles started running and having more fun than one man deserves. As my boy stated above I had the pleasure of shuttling him and his lovely wife for a few runs down Sunrise.

Me and the boys had a party run down Sunrise and had a ball before the crashes, flats, bears and broken bikes.

Saturday night was a fun party full of shenanigans.

Words cannot express how I feel when I am up there, my wife has found a new bestie ( Billy's wife Kathleen, her story is here....http://www.wtfman.com/kathleen.htm ) and I have found what I hope will be a second home someday.
Many many thanks to Greg, Mason, Kurt, Evan, The Jon Palmer ( you dropped something ) and the whole Yuba/ Sierra Buttes crew for everything you do to make it so freaking rad! Thank you to Kyle, Andy and Francis for organizing. Thanks to Randy, Ask, Bob-o and Scott for sharing the rides.
Lastly thanks to my family, Conner, Gina and my wife Hannah, sharing these times with them is what life is all about.

Minor detail - In our fun and games and swag giveaway, we raised $1900 cash money and promptly donated it to the Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship.

We got a ton of prizes by just dropping an email 10 days before the event. And many of our friends dropped $20s and $100s when they heard all proceeds would go to the Downievelle trails stewardship.

This was the brainchild of Andy Lightle and Kyle Maxwell. Hats off!

I just wanted to thank the sponsors of the event last weekend! There were a ton of rad prizes on Saturday night. I've pretty much never won anything, but Saturday I took home more than my share.

Downieville Gathering is almost here. June 24-26-2.jpg

Our crew had just spent 3 days having way too much fun shuttling the trails up there... so when we heard that all the funds raised were going to the Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship, we bought a ton of tickets.

Here are a few of the companies I saw on the prize table:
    X Fusion Shox
    Shimano
    Magura
    Stikrd!
    Bell
    Fox Shox
    Pickle Juice - Pickle Power!!!
    Stans
    Giro
    Oakley
    Timbuk2
    WTB

Also consider signing up for a Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship Membership. There is an iPad at the Yuba shop or you can go online to join. This group obviously does a great job with the trails and Core members get discounts at the shop/shuttles. Check it out!

This was a bit better than the pickle juice. I'm pretty sure that GlenGrant botttle was full a few minutes before I took this shot. Sunday's Mills Peak ride was a bit rough, and I'm not referring to the trail.

Most excellent adventures! Good times meeting new folks and seeing old friends. Seriously, we need name tags next time.

I did most of my riding solo on my SS. Found a few killer trails (the one behind Packsaddle camp was really sweet, short, but sweet) and a few losers (the hiking trail out of Sardine Lakes to Tamarack Lakes was a suffer-fest on the way up, probably pushing 90% of the time).

I'll post my pics, then add most captions later.

This is looking towards Tamarack Lakes. The trail from camp turns into jeep roads.

Endo and my losing lottery tickets. She was so beat after a day of following us around on Mills Peak and other rides, she crawled into the first tent she came to that night. Got kicked out, and made her way to Mike's tent, where she found a friendly sleeping bag.
