    Dec 6 - 12, 2019 Weekly Ride Stories

Smells like more rain for the weekend, then some sun next week. Trails should be mighty nice around Tuesday.

Creekside lot was packed w mtb riders at Ord under sunny blue skies and 67 degrees this AM. Course, I didn't bring a bike bc I thought I was in for a bunch of rain and ‘lectric ‘chainsawing’ at the cabin. Not the case and the carmel river was rather low. At least I took highway 1 down n back from SF. Still got hydrated and saw fun stuff.

My dumbass went for a "ride" yesterday afternoon, mud caked onto my tires so quickly, that i couldn't physically move the wheels through the frame after 5 minutes. 10 minutes later, after hiking the bike up the hill, cleaning the tires of mud, the same thing happened. So i gave up, i'll try rockville tomorrow i guess. Some days you just aren't meant to ride :-?

I'm curious if there is any place rideable in the South Bay where you don't have to drive an hour to get to. I'm thinking it is a no-go just about everywhere.

John Nicholas typically handles rain pretty well.

Locals: Trail is still soft pretty much everywhere. Hiked today and did some spot fixes and added a few more jumps. Looks like a Thursday/Friday ride should be epic.

Reminder: This is what happens when you ride it too early:Dec 6 - 12, 2019 Weekly Ride Stories-img_0515.jpg

If it looks like this, turn around!

In other news, part of the cattle gate was moved, and there are fresh 4-wheeler tracks. That only means one thing. Let's hope he holds off until the weekend!

Depending on where in the South Bay you are, and when you plan to hit the road, you might not be within an hour of anything.

On days when rain/wetness is a concern I've just gone to John Nicholas trail. It may be longer than an hour of travel time, but it handles rain extremely well. Rode there on Friday and there was a downed tree (you can walk around it) and there's some leaves and twigs here and there, but the dirt is in real good shape. The muddiest part was the access road from the trailhead to the lake.

So I made Bacon and Egg Pad Thai for dinner for the family. Delish, should’ve took a pic but didn’t. The reason why I am posting here though is I decided to setup my second wheelset for my Strive in Plus mode. I went with a WTB Vigilante 29x2.8 up front and used a used Maxxis DHF 29x2.6 WT for the rear. Super stoked to get out on the strive in plus mode!

I took my heavy duty trail-clearing kit up EMT today and cleared the downed trees from last week's storm. Now Wednesday should be good for some flow. The soft spots should be mostly dry by then.

Ord is drying out fast. Very few puddles out there and the sandy stuff will be dust soon. Ord is ready for more rain.

I did avoid all of goat, 82, and 50(south). Anyone ride those with an update?

Yeah, yeah, yeah... like critters sticking our heads out of the ground.

Yesterday, I did not dare go to Fremont Older so I went to my goto... St. Joes in Los Gatos. What commenced was hero dirt. A couple puddles but really insane traction.

Stevens Canyon was wet but rideable on Sunday. Lots of downed trees and branches, most of the large ones had been cleared out, although I cleared off a bunch of smaller branches:

Indeed ... but so is the Rainy Day Loop and I can ride that from my house

It's 10.6 miles and is a good loop when the trails are wet. It's a combination of dirt singletrack, gravel frontage roads, paved bike paths, and a little bit of road. Lots of places to "play" and skills develop including a little mini pump track and a few jumps. It also saves the "real" trails from trail damage.

I like to mix this in with Rockville to keep it fresh and once again, when Rockville is closed, the Rainy Day Loop is open 24/7 in a downpour, snow storm, high wind, fire danger, tornado, flash flood, tsunami, hurricane, earthquake, federal/state/city shutdown

Getting ready to clean the steed:

Rancho Del Oro is rideable but saucy. Calero is open which is surprising. A couple of dry days and the trails should be quite good.

No ride just digging in the sweet inky blackness of the dirt... Berms and more berms was the name of the game. The new DH ... can't wait for a few days of dryness ...
