    Cannel Plunge Update (June 12th)

I've been getting a lot of interest in the June 12 Cannel Ride so I put together a quick web page to get the info out, www.trogspace.com.

    ************************************************** *****
This is going to be one of those EPIC rides you wished you had made time for. The Trogs are showing up in force. Mountain & River Adventures already has its shuttles booked, we're going to shuttle ourselves. It's about a hour shuttle from Kernville. If you show up, be prepared to help shuttle or help pick up the shuttle cars at the end of the ride.

    The list of those going:
    George,
    Fred,
    Joseph,
    Bryan,
    Dennis (Ogre),
    Bruce, Erich,
    Colette,
    Curtis, (Al?)
    Alex,
    Steve,

    List of maybes:
    Jed (Suzie?)
    Fast Eddy

    The Plan:
We'll meet Saturday morning at 8:00am and we're going to shuttle ourselves. Bryan Lee has a 12 ft trailer that can carry many bikes and a truck. Others have volunteered more trucks if we end up with a bigger ride list.

    Ride, ride, ride.

Shuttle vehicles will be picked up after the ride, or if we're lucky, we may be able to find some extra non-riding drivers to bring back vehicles one we get dropped off.

    More details later.....

    Camping Info:
Map at left shows the string of campgrounds along the Kern River.

    Motel Info:
Maybe camping is not your thing.

Email me to tell me you're going, or if you have questions.

    More info..

I think you meant to provide a link to MTBike Bill's maps, photos and video:

Also don't forget The Ogre's RR with photos:

Motel space in Kernville is booked pretty solid on weekends. The Convention Center Motel 6 in Bakersfield is a very cheap and convenient place to stay, a little less than an hour from Kernville:

Some updates.... I don't know of anyone who's camping at the moment, but for those of us who are motelling it, we've found reasonable and available rooms at the Lake Isabella Motel (760) 379-2800. $66 for 2 queen beds, or 1 qeen and 2 twins.

I have no idea what the rooms are like but it's only 10 miles from Kernville, just on the other side of the lake so it'll be a quick drive Saturday morning to meet up for the shuttle.

Rooms in Kernville itself are hard to come by and about twice as expensive... camping is always an option and there is plenty of it along the kern river.

    Update this morning

Received from shuttle company this morning: "We have a shuttle going up this Sunday. From last reports, there is still snow in some areas of the trail higher up. There will be snow hike-a-bike on some of the trail."

Should be fine for our trip which is two weeks away. Also heard from UncleMTB yesterday and he is probably coming with me. People coming from farther north might want to meet in Stockton or the Modesto area and carpool down friday afternoon or evening. Extra vehicles could be left at some of our homes.

    No special tires

Most of the trail is much like the Tahoe Rim Trail from Mt. Rose if you've done that. The top third of the Plunge has mucho decomposed granite. Otherwise it's pretty nice hardpacked stuff. We'll cross two rather mucky meadows but not much you can do but sink in.

Hope you all break a spoke.

I'll be stewing at a Boy Scout event thinking about the ride I've most wanted to do for about a year and all your stupid-ass big smiles at the end. Drink an extra SNPA for me at the end...
