CAL FIRE prescribed burns at UCSC Feb 13-14

Just got this in the email from Matt et al at MBOSC.

As previously announced, CAL FIRE is planning to conduct two days of prescribed burns in the upper reaches of campus this week in cooperation with campus fire crews. The burns are expected Tuesday and Wednesday, Feb. 13-14.

While we understand many people would like a more precise schedule, the timing of prescribed burns is based on winds and weather, and exact start times are impossible to know in advance.

The majority of activity will take place near the water tanks on Chinquapin Road. For this reason, and because there will be heavy equipment in the area, CAL FIRE asks that people avoid upper campus starting today. North Fuel Break Road between West and Red Hill roads also will be affected. A map of the areas set to be burned can be seen here.

The burns are needed to thin heavy brush, plants, and other vegetation that can fuel wildfires.

For more information, please read the burn notice posted on our Newscenter. Email the university’s Office of Emergency Services at oes@ucsc.eduif you have additional questions.
