    10/30/18 Joaquin Miller Park Closed....Again

Just got word that Joaquin Miller Park is closed due to fire danger. Bummer, we we're supposed to have our annual company picnic there today. Was hoping to try out Cindy on the cross bike!

Silver lining, this means I'm going to Stafford Lake today, so that doesn't suck I guess....

I was hoping to ride there this afternoon. How'd you come by this info? It's closed a few times this summer but there's never info on the park website.

Cindy on a cross bike? I'd like to see that!

I just saw volunteers at the end of Sequoia Bayview telling people the park is closed due to red flag conditions. OPD on trail on bikes even! I went across to Redwood...

If anyone today (10/31) knows if JMP is open or still closed, please post it here.

The Red Flag warning was forecast to end at 11AM today. Park should be open after that. *Should.* I'll post later if I get up there.

I would not be surprised if the park were closed tomorrow as well. The NWS has issued another red flag warning for the east bay hills.

"The warning runs from 1 a.m. Saturday to 6 a.m. Sunday, although the National Weather Service may extend it if conditions remain hazardous."

I was out there this morning doing a quick lap before work. No signs saying it's closed and lots of hikers by 8am. But then I heard that there was a red flag warning for the north bay and easy bay hills. Not sure if that means they'll close it back down again.

    Uh oh.

Fire now near Highway 13 and Joaquin Miller road. Can see several choppers circling it from my house. Smoke over the hills.

Looks like it's under control: https://twitter.com/OaklandFireLive/...23384801734656

I'm assuming that means it's still burning but now manageable?

There was a smoke plume over the area until about 12:30 but it is clear sky there now.

    Smoky:

The spotter copter was hovering over my nabe.

Smoke plume drifted over Oakland and gave the sunlight a weird yellowish tinge.

Looks like it was just along the shoulder of Highway 13 just south of Joaquin Miller Road. Some news video here.

Honestly not sure if the smoke in the above pictures was from this event or just the leading edge of the smoke coming down from the Camp fire up north. Visibility is only like a mile now.

Just drove by the park and the gates were open.

Very surprising as another red flag warning has been issued that will covert tonight through Monday, and I thought they'd just do the lazy thing and leave the park closed all weekend.

Air quality up there is not very good though.

The gates were inexplicably open yesterday, even though there was strong gusty wind and red flag conditions. The smoke was thinner at the top of the ridge so I brought my bike up for a short lap. The big rut section of Cinderella is getting some teeth again here at the end of a long dry season.

Gates were closed this morning when I went by.

Was at JMP yesterday afternoon, at the Big Trees / Sequoia Bayview trailhead they had a closed sign.

Fortunately, I didn't notice the sign when I entered. Me the dog walked about 2-3 miles, didn't see any riders, just a few runners. Nice and quiet.

They are so bad at taking down signage up there in a timely fashion. They'll put up signs for events at the amphitheater and forget to take them down for days after. And there's only a few of those. The "park closed" signs they've been using on red flag days are all over the place and even more likely to be forgotten. If the gates are open, I generally ignore the signs.

When a red flag alert has been issued I expect the park will be closed. But the latest alert expired at 7am this morning so who knows why the gates were closed at 11. I'm hoping it will be open by late afternoon as my dog likes the dog park there.

Anyone check it out today? Is it open? Was hoping to do a post work ride. I know the air isn't too great, but planning on taking it fairly easy.

Open now. I'm at the park with my dog. It's smokier than the past few days though.

The optimist in me thought the shift in wind direction forecast for today would push the smoke out. Instead it seems to have stirred it up. It is smokier now up at park elevation than any time since this started.

The air at JMP is really good now. If you want to get one last run down the inch deep moon dust on Chapparal, do it now before the rain arrives in the morning.

Anyone know how JMP conditions are today? Is it too muddy?

It's a little bit muddy here and there but there are lots of people up there today. Trails will be crowded.

The gates to the parking lots by the ranger station are closed. Not unusual for a holiday unfortunately.

JMP is best ridden on holidays / weekends at 6:30am. Crowds get ridiculous after 8am

Parking lot was closed again yesterday. A lot of the trails were packed with hikers, off leash dogs, and a few cyclists. Cindy and Chappy were empty and I got a clean run down each. Conditions on those two trails were awesome.

Parking lot still closed today. Quite annoying for those of us who use the dog park.

Puddles and running water everywhere today. Super thick fog too. Hardly saw anyone.
