Pretty sure you and I are equal it terms of KOM capability so it might be the other way around! We can film at least one crazy Sierra rd descent including coming within inches of the guardrail and everything! Going to have to play around with mounting this thing to find the best spot. I worked on my fork this past weekend and I had too mush air pressure. It floats like butter now and can't wait to give RR a try, camera and all.

Wow thanks! A camera is on my list of things I want, not need, but at 90 bucks and free one day shipping and my recent bonus, I'm going to pick one up!

I guess I should order mount nad SD card from amazon too? probably cheaper compared to Frys etc..

I added SD card but then 1 day shipping wasn't free hehe, oh well, I will buy a 16gb or something at Fry's or just do it separely with free super saver, I'm cheap

Got mine yesterday too and I must say, looks pretty cool. I might be a touch on the mentally slow side because I had a heck of a time figuring how to get the back of the camera open! My 8 year old could make a better instruction booklet. Just know that you unlock the back (that part I figured out easily) but then you push the door upward and then it flips open. Seems easy now but wasn't when I was fumbling around with it. Just have to wait for mini sd card to arrive as well and off I go.

Yeah, all these POV cameras have no SD card.

Mine should be at the office. Going on a lunch ride with my new friends Hero2 and Countour!

I didn't know it didn't come with a card so I have to check when it will be delivered. I am going to ride ST even if I can't get the card in time. I will ride with just two friends because I don't have many except for Johnny Walker and Jim Beam. They do make the descent down RR more enjoyable though. Seriously though, I just also bought the flex mount and will need to figure out a good mounting position. Maybe I can rig it to a fiberglass glass flag pole off the daughters bike and get a good shot of me coming down. I imagine it would look like I was jousting an invisible opponent to others. Now just one more thing to charge and remember to take riding. I am running out of plug space at home!

Glad I am not the only one who had this issue. I ended up having to google it to find out how it opened up. Feel pretty stupid not that I could not figure it out but that is life. I ended up getting the unit for $79.99 since I used my Mastercard, plus I got free overnight shipping which saved an additional $18.00. It does not come with a MicroSD card so I ordered a couple of them from Amazon. Waiting for the unit to charge so I can try it out this evening.

The flex mount is awesome, with my first contour I tried ghetto rigging the goggle mount with zip ties and it worked but it didn't give me as many options as the flex mount with the 2 straps. I mounted it to the fork with the strap mount just be careful on RR not to clip it when picking your line!

Haven't opened it yet! But it does come with a couple basic mounts. Here's the strap mount that I would HIGHLY suggest - Amazon.com: Contour 2755 Flex Strap Mount for Contour Cameras: Camera & Photo

Looks like they addressed a couple issues from the old Contour like a raised more prominent record button and also I like the fact this camera is waterproof. Took the old one snowboarding and ate it in some powder, didn't hurt the camera but this is good piece of mind.

I got mine too when I arrived at the house. I couldn't open the back either. I tried hard before going to the internets first.

It looks like a real product compared to the 'toy-like' gopro.

But the mounts are grossly lacking. How do I mount it to the handlebar, seatpost, windshield?

Was out at the Dog at lunch yesterday and was trying to come up with something witty to say to your camera as I figured our path's would cross.

Personally I'm searching for one of these butt plug mounts but they only seem to be available to go pro users

got mine last night and am charging it now. Supposed to ride tonight so I'll get to try it out.
Looks like I need to order the flex mount....I have a double strap velcro mount from DealExtreme....going to try that tonight and see how that works...

Ok, shot some video and it seems pretty wide angle.

I downloaded the Contour Storyteller app and it said my firmare was 1.02 and that I should upgrade to 1.06 to fix sound and stuff.

How do I change the resolution and angle? All Storyteller lets me do is change fps from 30 to 25.

Found this on the interwebs, may not work with your current or the upgraded firmware, might check it out before upgrading the firmware though, and take note it may damage the camera, but I have no ideal how it could do that.

60 fps is achievable with Roam but only with 1.01 firmware.

In your Roam there is a configuration file on the SD card (this is easier to do than it sounds dont worry!). If you open it in notepad you can mod it to make the camera shoot 60fps.

The config file normally looks like this:

    UPDATE:N
    UPDATE_FW:N

    1RES:C
    1BR:H
    1MIC:35
    1SILENT:0

You need to change it to look like this:

    UPDATE:Y
    UPDATE_FW:Y

    1RES: D
    1BR:H
    1MIC:35
    1SILENT:0

its enabling an imbedded firmware update and setting it to 720p @ 60fps, it appears that contour either couldn't be bothered to make to different firmwares for the Roam and Plus, or have a hidden firmware update in the Roam. Either way i can shoot all day with these settings and nothing has happened to my Roam.

On the forum, one of the staff said it will break your processor or sensor and void your warranty. he suggested that if for whatever reason, your processor or sensor was broken, your warranty would be void because this mod is the ONLY way to break it. i am not sure if this is true or not, pretty sure its not legal."

Pretty sure you can't change angle, that's in the lens. I believe it's a 170*, the originals were 130*.

Not sure on resolution, haven't got mine yet. But the Roam doesn't have "Action HD", so while you might be able to change resolution to down to 720, the frame rate would stay the same, it'd just be lower quality video (ie don't know why you would). I suppose the files would be smaller, but 16gb cards are like $10 now.

Did you have it stuck in the headrest? I ordered the flex mount because I just don't know where to stick the sticker mounts and not sure I want to. I would love to fin mounts that use the tripod screw feature instead. Some research will have to be done and people will share how they mount and if they have made their own. Going to try mine now.

It was sandwiched under the headrest. Just got a lucky angle.

I'm bummed. I got my Roam the next day I ordered it. FAST.
I bough16GB Micro SD card, updated the firmware version 1.06, turned up the volume to the max 42.....NO SOUND. I could only hear the camera movement.
I called customer support and they told me I have a defective unit and to send it back. Has anybody else had this problem after the update?

So, has anyone played with it yet? I'm riding tomorrow and will try it out. I set it at the 1080/30fps setting last night and shot the inside of my office. Playback is jerky and jumpy....assume thats my computer and not the camera....

What is everyone using for settings to get the best results?

Yeah I set mine for the same setting and noticed the same jerky playback. I went on the contour support site and they say that it is the computer that has the issues and they direct you how to fix it. I didn't bother trying. I had to wait for my mount in the mail as I have a weird seat post (mast) and it is not round. Going to Demo today and will play around with it. I might mount on the downtube with the flex mount and see what happens.
    They never made the "Slowster"

For settings, I couldn't change resolution or angle. All I could change was frame rate from 30 to 25. So I just left it alone.

Video is smooth, sound is weak. Wide angle is ok usually. I mounted it to the spare tire of a jeep and shot these rearward facing shots. The forward facing shots are Gopro Hero 2.

The Contour Roam video quality is like the Gopro Hero. The Hero 2 is at another level.

I ordered the flex mount but haven't gotten it yet. I was thinking of mounting on my helmet in the hopes that it would be less bumpy....

I got a 16 gig card and got over 2 hours of footage. So I think that's the ideal card for the battery charge.

I got a big education though in editing as I though I'd just power through the edit with my Imac.It took about 3 hours just to get the footage in the computer. Then I had my gopro with a 32 gig card and that took 4 hours. Then it ran out of disk space.

Imovie wanted 200 gigs just for workspace for this footage.

So fast computer, lots of disk and lots of ram are called for here.

Got mine! Took it to Moab on Monday to mess around. Much improved in every respect compared to my original Contour HD (720). Very pleased!

yeah, I was wondering if this was going to push me to upgrade my 3 year old laptop.....video creates huge files and I'm pretty sure my computer will be overwhelmed...
FC - To change the resolution you have to click on Tools, configure camera, position 1 - then it lets you adjust the resolution

I used the included rotating mount and stuck it to my full-face Giro Remedy just behind the left visor mount.

I have a goggle strap mount too, but that one wiggles like crazy.

Man that looks like a lot of fun! Thanks for posting that.

In my family we have 4 of these little doo-dads with the intention of using 3 of them for snowboarding and mountain biking while my dad will be attaching his to the RC airplanes he flies.

It looks like the camera ships with the 1.02 firmware, so does that mean we cannot use the 60fps mod?

I can't wait to use mine.

So I finally got around and unboxed this thing and made a small test movie.

When I click on the movie with story teller it immediately crash's anyone else have this problem?

I can go into the camera with windows explorer and view the movie, so I can copy and edit it with other software, be nice to be able to use the software that comes with the camera. I was able to update the firmware with it though.

when I plug it in, it allows me to import the movie and view it with quicktime. I have Windows movie maker, but it won't recognize .MOV files so that doesn't work.
The story teller it drags my computer to a halt....

Storyteller cannot edit. It allows you to pick short sections of video and upload them.

So... My kind sister gave me a Contour Roam from REI for Xmas. Seems to be a sleek package with easy use, features I highly value. Yet... lots of misc Contour complaints, and very few issues reported from GoPro users. I'd be all over it for $89, but at $199 full retail, I'm inclined to return for credit and exchange for the best online deal. I can buck up for the Hero 2 if this is the better all around system, or best deal on GoPro or Contour entry level cameras. Seems like MTBR users with the $89 Roam are having typical issues causing me concern. Thanks for your ongoing Contour Roam reports, and comparisons relative to GoPro for consumers still considering the options.

Anyone have any recommendations on free or cheap basic editing software that's fairly intuitive to use?

the software is cheap and comes with the machine. It's the machine that may be the issue for you. But then again, your computer will never crash or bog down again.

You could be rockin the big time...

Not talking about the Hero2... just the editing!

The sound sensitivity can be adjusted in the Storyteller software settings, from 0 (no sound) to max sound sensitivity.

Wow. Amazing that sometimes we cant get to Star lake in July yet you are riding there on Dec 31. How thick is that ice? I use AVS Video Editor with my Contour 1080. Works very well with MOV files and is relatively cheap and easy to use.

Nice to see what a good video editor can do with the Contour. Alot of people bag on it but I love Contour 1080. Much better then wearing a small kitchen appliance on your head!

Not really sure how thick it was, but people have been ice skating the mountain lakes up here due to no snow. I actually crossed Star lake on Skis the first week of January last year, definitely strange to be up there on a bike.

Thanks for the editor recommendation, I'll check it out.

So I downloaded an evaluation copy of the software, and it was easy to figure out. Thanks for the recommendation! plan on purchasing.

I ended up buying the strap mount and experimented with a few different camera angles. I'm very satisfied with this camera especially since it only cost $89.

AVS works pretty good for what it costs plus you get all kinds of photo and audio utilites as well. I find that saving it at "HD Video 720p:MPEG4" gives the best combo of high definition vs. file size. the HD Video 1080p gives a little better picture quality but the file size is usually much bigger.

All is want for Christmas is a contour roam.

I must have been a good husband Here's my first attempt at putting some clips together from my first ride with the Contour. The camera was mounted to the top tube using the flex mount.

Here is some night video. Yes, it will depend on your light setup. This was done with 2 handlebar lights and a helmet light. Not sure of the lights specs.

What is in the lights range/path is pretty clear.

Glad people got some use out of the code. Here is my first attempt at a video. It was my first ride in over a month so I felt a bit stiff which I think contributed to my fall at 5:30. It's really dusty and loose out there - I lost traction a few times. LMK if you have any videoing or riding suggestions.

I have been experimenting with different mounts for the contour.

In case you’re wondering what they look like, this video used three.

0:14 – camera falling off the strap mount when I forgot to “lock” it in position!
0:21 – 0:50: Strap mount on the fork
1:03 – 1:20: Modified chest mount for the contour
    2:27 – 3:08: RAM mount

I’ve had the GPS Contour since it first came out. I couldn’t pass up this price so I got the $89 Roam when I saw this!

With two cameras, I need to be super selective on which clips I keep as I’m running through disk space fast!

I have another video on youtube where I went down and the contour (using the RAM mount) goes into the dirt and mud… pretty durable….

2 min clip descending Ancient Oaks trail at Russian Ridge OSP on new years eve. Default settings 760p/30fps. Contour Roam strapped to left side of frame with flex strap. Much of the view is blocked by fork. Not a good mounting spot when trying to film someone ahead.

Not sure if there is a way for the camera to do this, but if your using editing software it should be able to output in about any format you like.

I've been using this editor AVS Video Editor: perfect for home video editing. Edit video easily! that craigstr recommended and found it pretty intuitive, I mucked around a bit the first time but I just did my third one and was able to throw it together in about 45 minutes, see link below.

I've also tried burning a DVD for the first time and put it up on the 55 inch widescreen and it looked great.

Also I've been filming pretty short clips since it's so easy to turn this camera on and off and it starts filming in like 2 seconds I rarely film more than a minute or so at a time, usually much less which makes it easier to wade though the footage you captured.

@ Tahowbc - Nice video. what setting do you have your contour set at 720/30fps? What mount are you using in that video?

It's set like it was out of the box, 720/30. I used the flex mount for all the camera angles, it's very easy & quick to take off your helmet and move around to different spots on your bike.
