Cool-blue Rhythm Hope Custom Rotor Question + Bike Porn

Just got my Hope custom rotors installed. I went ahead and took the time to also do a complete service on my CK iso disc hubs to include all seals, o-rings, lube, etc. For those of you who own CK hubs and you like to do your own wrenching, I highly recommend purchasing the CK hub service tool. It won't take long to pay for itself considering what it would cost to have a LBS do the work. I'm all for keeping LBSs in business, but I also enjoy the satisfaction of doing my own wrenching.

Now for the question: for those that have Hope custom rotors, did you notice in order to read the text from the brake side of the bike, you must install the rotors with the vanes pointing against the direction of rotation

The manual that came with my Minis says to mount the rotor with the vanes pointing in the direction of rotation. I have asked Hope what's up with this, and I'll post their response once I get it.

Now for the porn: my rotors.

Post your pics of Hope custom rotors, so those without them can be envious of our cool stuff!

    Happy riding,

    Dont think it matters.

YUMMY!!! I had a conversation about this not long ago with a few friends, was actually about the gothic rotors, I was saying Customs would be much cooler..... ^ Theres proof!

As for the way the Veins go, I'm not sure it would matter, 2 reasons they are there Are strength, running them backwards wont make all that much difference IMO! And Cooling, again wont make much difference, your brakes wont really get hot enough to make a difference; Unless you on like a 20minute solid DH

I ran both my Hayes and Avid rotors backwards, and I have to say I noticed no difference, and nothing whent wrong with them.

    I'm sure you are right, . . .

Here is what I sent to Hope, I'll be sure and post their response for everyone's enjoyment.

Gwen, I just wanted to let you know the rotors arrived today. They look great! Now, I have a technical question for you. The manual for the Mini brakes says to put the rotor on the bike with the vanes pointing in the direction of forward rotation. To read the text on the rotors from the brake side of the bike, I will have to install them with the vanes pointing in the opposite direction. Will this be a problem? I searched through the message boards on MTBR and found some pictures of other rider's custom Hope rotors and noticed they all mounted them with the vanes pointing against the rotation in order to read the text.

I know some manufacturers build their rotors with the vanes pointing forward and others with them pointing backwards. I know that the Shimano XT and Grimeca System 8 brakes are essentially the same, and these two systems have the rotor vanes pointing in the opposite direction. Again, searching through the MTBR message boards, I noticed about a 50/50 variation in mounting directions.

Let me know what you think.

Thanks again for the cool looking rotors.

    Hmm… right you are!

I didn't notice that, but you're right. Hope also messed up the lettering on the rear rotor, but I let it slide. One of the brake gurus, maybe Thor, wrote that reversing the rotor direction can lead to warpping under hard use. Worth looking into. I look forward to reading Hope's response when you post it.

You've all seen 'em before, but these are my wife's custom Hopes:

    vanes pointing rearwards....

I've heard that the Pro's that run Hope's here in the UK turn the rotor's around because it reduces squeel. It makes sense, the vanes are being stretched, instead of compressed during braking and as you can imagine that this would induce less vibration in the rotor....I've run 3 sets of Hopes the "wrong" way for years and, they still squeel like anything, I guess it doesn't make a difference so doesn't really matter.

I've tried them in both directions and I don't notice a difference in braking with them in either direction. Currently have them each facing different ways!

    Hey Rob,

Long time no hear. Nope, haven't had a change to go by Kiyoshi's yet. I haven't seen him since sometime in Sep-03 before I went TDY. I've only ridden a few times since I got back. I'll probably see him sometime soon though. Since I don't remember which bikes I had when you left, here are all three of them. You will recognize them at least.

    Well enjoy,
    Chris

    Hey Chris

    Hey Chris,
Yeah, I know the TDY thing can get in the way of riding sometimes. I'm recovering from a severe ankle/leg twist from a fall off my single speed in the snow. I'm getting better, can't run for PC but I've been riding to work as much as possible for rehab. I'll post some pics soon. Elina is growing big and about to start crawling. Junko is fine too (she never rides her GT). Take car and talk to you later and I'll let you know if I will goto Japan in March after my TDY to the east coast (I leave Friday).

    Rob
