Because the back brakes need a service. Bleed them as a minimum.

You have either "lost" some brake fluid or more likely you have air in the system. This happens to brakes. More unlikely is the hose is stretching under pressure.

If you pay someone to service your brakes or you buy a bleed kit and do it yourself. If the calipers need a rebuild kit. It may just be cheaper to buy new brakes. I have seen at CRC Juicy 3's for about $80 (considering you get a new rotor and new pads as part of the package). If your bike is 5 years old you may well need new pads and rotors as well.

A new brake system would be the best thing if in the budget. If not could be pads as mentioned, adjustment or and fluid. The fluid should be replaced about once a year, this never happens in the real world though.
