    Hayes MX4

Any good? I'm looking at a bike that comes with them standard and I'm completely and utterly clueless when it comes to brakes.

Bump for prsman...I have the same question.

Also, if you happen to have an extra PRS, I'll gladly take it.

Not that great. For mech disks, you want avids - BB5 are common OEM equipment and the more adjustable BB7 for aftermarket.

What exactly makes them 'not that great?' Could you go into detail?

Avid mechs have the best stopping power of mechanicals - they're mono-body calipers (one piece, not bolted together), great modulation, good lightweight lever that won't bend, easy to setup/maintain in general. It's superior all around.

It looks like you're buying an entry level mountain bike. You'll be glad if you get something in in the 800 MSRP range rather than the 500. The components will perform better and be much more durable.
