    Used Bike Purchase

I have a VERY limited budget to purchase a mountain bike to get started in the sport. So I feel my best bet is to look for a used decent bike on eBay or such and get started until later next year when I can spend more on a better bike. I would appreciate any input as to some decent used models to search for on eBay for around $150 or so.

    Thanks in advance...

    Rather than ebay....

Look to your local bike store or the local classifieds. You will spend at least $35-$50 of your $150 on shipping if you buy on ebay. $150 won't buy you much, even in a used bike. $100-$115 even buys you less. Also, never buy sight unseen, or without test riding the bike. You'll never know if the bike is the right size, what condition it's in, etc., etc.

I purchased my first mountain bike (an early '90's Chromoly Giant Yukon) for $150.00 at a local bike store who delt with used bikes. It wasn't in the best condition, but it was a lot better than what I had purchased (and subsequently returned) at WalMart the day before. It served me well for two years when I was finally able to buy new.

    Good luck in your hunt!

Well there is craigslist.org for local sales.

Personally I have a lot more success finding good cheap bikes on ebay. But for a good steal hardtail you are going to need a $300 budget maybe a bit more due to shipping.

For that money I got a Bontrager 9spd in great (almost new) condition

and a Kona explosif that had been converted to a SS.

Both are cool for the price of a good wheelset.
