Could you do a build up better than an Ebay bike? I think it might be tough. There are a lot of buyers who lurk around Ebay for bargains and then disassemble the bikes and part them out. Between now and December there are a lot of bargains on Ebay. The build kits are the same price year round.
Here is an example of a two year old XTR build Epic on Ebay. You would still have to buy a fork with most build kits so that also another $400 for a Fox or Reba Its also tough getting an Epic frame for less than $600.

Another option, buy a complete bike and transfer all the parts. There maybe some parts that are not compatible such as seatpost (31.6 to 27.2 sleeve =$6.00) front derailleur and bottom bracket ?? (do a research). Anyway, you'll be looking at a 24/25 lbs Epic.

    An example would be this:

I forgot about that. That was essentially what the old Supergo used to do except they repackaged all the parts off the bikes and either sold or dumped the frames.

I miss Supergo - one of my LBS. This time of the year, they usually have a big blowout of bicycles from Specialized, Klein, Fishers even Cannondale. Supergo bought all their surplus inventories and selling them 40-60% off MSRP. Most of the good stuff can be seen there too and at a huge discount. No more eye candies for me.
