New to biking, need help deciding first real bike

So I just started riding this year and I'm looking to buy my first entry level mountain bike. I ride single track and would like to eventually get into other categories of mountain biking. I'm 6'1 and 160 lb with a inseam of about 34". I have 2 bikes in mind but cant decide which one. Trek 820 or Motobecane 500HT. My price limit is $400 nothing over. Ordering a bike online makes me kind of nervous though and Ive heard mixed reviews about bikesdirect.com. Any advise would be appreciated!

Go to your local bike shop.

Go to your local bike shop. They will give you the support you need with this bike for the next year.

Don't overthink this. Make sure it fits.
    I don't rattle.

It's best to get your first bike at your LBS, once you know what you are doing or exactly what you want to get for the next bike then go ahead shop online. Going to test out the bike at LBS then go buy it online is a NO-NO

Do it right either do your homework online then flip the coin or spend your money locally like every posters have suggested so far
