need some suggestions, $500, around town, hardtail, little offroad,

My friend is looking for a new bike. He wants a hardtail. He mainly just rides around town with a little offroading and *edit* no *edit* downhill. Nothing major at all. What would you guys suggest for him?

In that price range if you actually expect to do anything with downhill, abuot the only thing I can think of right now is the Specialized P.1. It's a single-speed marketed as a dirt jumper and you'll have to spend a few bucks for a brake upgrade, but it's a sturdy bike.

Now for plain ol' XC riding, for that kinda money I'd say go look at the Giant Yukon. Really good value for the money, but NOT a downhill bike.
A man is only a man, but a good bicycle is a ride.

I talked to him and hes really not going to do any downhill, more just around town, so scratch downhill off the list. He wants a 21 or 24 speed, so no single speeds. Rim brakes are fine, he doesn't need disks.
    Any other suggestions?

I just bought a Specialized Hardrock Comp, $510 msrp. It's a great bike for around town and a little offroad. Plus, it's got a strong frame so if he changes his mind about downhill he'll have less to worry about.
