Merida company - worth of interest?

Has anyone ever heard about Merida producent? I am not sure if it is known outside Europe. Merida is an Italian company said to produce good but pretty expensive bicycles. Frames of that bikes are especially recommended by bicycle vendors here in Warsaw - I am wondering if it is true and if they are really better than others.

I have bought Merida Miami Matts 2006 model about 3 years ago with a discount (it was a bike from the year before). I am not a professional and it is my first bike on the level so I can not say that it is better than adequate Trek model because of that and it is worse because of that. Or maybe I just know my possibilities and am not one of these guys who bought their first bike last month and with a serious face announce the truths and lies about all bicycles in the world :P

I would not buy Merida without a discount because I might buy another producent's bike with the same equipment and slightly lower price (Kelly's for example). Am i right?

Could any of forum's specialists give some light to my wonderings?

If I recall correctly, Merida is part owner (majority owner?) of Specialized. Merida manufactures many of the Specialized-brand bikes. That connection to Specialized is probably why you don't see the Merida brand much in the States.

I am not sure but read on some forums some months back that it is extremely popular in New Zealand, like every other bike you see is a Merida. Not there to verify it personally.
