    lightweight/hill climbing...

Ok, I am getting a bike to commute, commute is only a couple miles but it is litteraly down a hill one way and back up another way (Providence Rhode Island, I live atop the college hill and ride to class/studio downtown. A lightweight frame is important, as every night I am going to need to climb that hill, so anything that climbs easy is great. I am going to be almost exclusively on city streets, a little light dirt trail here and there, should I look into a single gear setup?

With that being said I think I want to get a hardtail, because, simply I don't think I need the full suspension and I've bee riding one (Albeit a cheaper one) and don't find it that awesome. I also would like to start doing some more maitnence myself and keep the costs a little lower. I was thinking around 1800 max, probabbly closer to 1350/1400 any suggestions?

Do you really want a MTB bike or would you better with a comfort road bike
One the MTB side check out a Ibex Trophy either the Pro or the Comp is pleanty for what your asking. They are a net company that bring a sweet bike to the table for a smoking good price.
