Ibis Mojo HD3 vs HD4 vs HD5 sizing and upgrade

I currently have a Mojo HD3 medium that I've ridden for the past 5 years. I've learned a lot on it and have had a lot of fun but at 5'9 and a half (5'10 with shoes), the bike feels quite a bit small. I also have a longer torso than legs so the reach and cockpit feels especially short. Now that I finally feel like i've improved as a rider, I've been thinking about getting a bike that fits me better for the steep gnarly downhill. So here's my options.

Buy HD3 Large frame and swap my components.

    Buy HD4 Medium/Large used (they're cheaper now).

Buy HD5 Medium/Large frame and build.

First question: will the extra bit of reach on a medium HD4 be significantly roomier compared to a medium HD3? Or do you think for my height I should still consider a Large HD4?

Second question: the HD5 specs are even longer than the HD4 so if I go the HD5 route, should I just stick with medium? I've read and heard some reviews claiming the HD5 actually fits true to size and might even size up a bit (medium feels like a large, etc).

I understand the bikes don't exactly have the same ride characteristics and I really do like how the HD3 handles already (quite nimble and playful). But I'm open to a more capable descending bike as I'm hitting the bike parks more frequently and am riding much more aggressively downhill. I like the idea of the HD4's shock leverage ratio design (though I've never tried it) better than the HD3 and I like the more modern geometry of the HD5 with a steeper seatube angle (wish the HD4 had it).

Any thoughts on sizing? I have one or two Ibis dealers in my area (MN) but they don't stock any Ibis bikes and can only order them if I purchase.

I'm the same height as you and have owned three (and test rode others) Ibis bikes in both medium and large and finally gave up on Ibis. The mediums always felt a little small and the larges felt a little big (except for the large HD3). Sorry no help just personal experience.

    Hi!
Iím 5ft 9 on a HD3 in medium and looking to upgrade to a HD4. You will be fine on large HD4 in my opinion. Iím considering a large with a shorter stem.
Over here in UK itís a £1000 saving with a HD4 if I get a frame, it has the X2 too.
    Itís an interesting debate though.

Thank you for your responses, they do help a lot. I am thinking of going the HD4 route and getting a Large as well since it's cheaper now. I'm always down for shortening the stem a bit (I'd rather do that then lengthen the stem on a medium). Jeff Kendall-Weed is 5'8 (174cm) and he fits the Medium HD4 pretty well but he said if he was racing still he'd probably use a Large which makes me more confident in fitting a Large HD4 or HD5. I've always ridden medium XC bikes my whole life and maybe it's just because the Mojo HD3 is my first AM/Trail bike that I'm not use to the shorter stem. I demoed a Large Norco Sight a few years back and it seemed to fit perfectly. Maybe I'll just go a different bike completely. Leaning towards HD4 though but will have to wait to see how the the HD5 fares.

Prices on the HD4 are looking pretty decent, especially used ones. Now I'm wondering if its worth spending an extra thousand or two on the HD5? Probably not...

He told me the same thing when I asked him about sizing on a Ripmo.

Lew Buchanan , Ibis EWS rides a large HD4, same height as you.
And Jeff K has messaged me via instagram of late saying the Hd4 is a Ďgreatí bike. Go for it.
