not a very big deal, you can drill the top part round , then re tap it. wont take very long to do it if you have the proper tool

I've never done anything related to this, are the tools expensive?

Yes, it would be an easy fix for most any person with a mechanical aptitude.
Could remove the "raised" sections with a flat, smooth file. Then remove most of the messed up thread with a small rat-tail or chain saw type file. Then use a tap or even just a longer bolt started from the back-side to re-thread the mangled sections.
The aluminum is easy to remove. Might get by with just a bolt run from the backside, a "Self-tapping bolt" would help.
