Hardtail / full suspension frame swap?

    Hi All,

This may be a stupid question, but is it possible to swap a hardtail frame for a full suspension?

The reason I ask is that I ride a Rockhopper with top-end components, and I don't want to drop another $2000 to get a FS with top end components, I'd rather just swap the frames if that's possible.

Yep. You might have to change some parts though - seat post (may bedifferent diameter) and change/rebuild hubs (different forks standarts).

    No problem.

    Pay attention to:

    - bottom bracket shell width (for internal BBs)
    - Head-tube length/type and fork steerer length
    - fork travel vs. new frame's intended fork travel (usually going from a hardtail to a cross country FS frame should be no problem)
    - brake compatibility (i.e. rim brakes on old frame to disc on new frame?) and wheel compatibility (if your old bike has rim brake only wheels, you may need new wheels)
    - seat-tube diameter
    - front derailur style (high clamp vs. low clamp)
    - front derailur clamp diameter

Most frames will come with seatpost clamp and headset. Confirm that the new frame does come with that stuff or include it in your cost to transfer.

It depends on what FS frame you are swapping to just like Justin said. It's difficult to get a FS for $2000 that comes with top-end anything. What kind of top-end components do you have on your RockHopper? Not all would or should be transfer to FS.
