Down To My Final Choice: Hardrock or Avalanche?

I am down to my final choice:

2007 (New) Specialized Hardrock Sport for $350
    or
2005 (New) GT Avalanche 3.0 Disc for $299

What I want is a bike that rides great on on and off road trails but I will never do any racing, jumps, drop-offs, or anything crazy. I want a bike that will hold up and that I don't have to upgrade in a year if I don't want to.

Which one should I go with and why?

    Thanks!

try the Hardrock. I tested it out at my LSB just this week when deciding on my new bike. Its a pretty sweet ride, and I think you'll enjoy it greatly.

    Hardrock owner

I don't know anything about the GT, but I own a 2007 Hardrock Sport myself and absolutely love it. I bought it because I wanted something that I wouldn't need to upgrade in a year if I didn't want to. It's entry level, but it's top-of-the-line entry level, if that makes any sense. The frame and wheels are strong as can be, and I'm a heavy guy (215) so that was important to me.

I'm looking at the same thing, except I added the 4300 from Trek. I'm going towards the Specialized. I'm hoping thats the right choice.
