    Is this a crack?

Its small, but it worries me. Is this a crack. It doesnt seem to be an impact because the crack creeps through the complex shape of the caliper boss. Taking it to my LBS tomorrow.

Scrape off the paint, drop in some food coloring, look at it with good light and a magnifying glass. Looks like something scratched the paint and the resulting corrosion pushed up some paint on the sides. Iff all good, use nail polish to fix the paint.

From your photos, it looks like a fiber trapped in the paint. Get out your magnifying glass (or take additional photos and blow them up) and take a closer look at it.

Looks more like just a surface imperfection than a crack.

Cracks don't stick up above the surface they're in. That is something either in the paint or that was on the surface and painted over.

Has it always been there? If so, not a crack. If it is new, it IS a crack. Looks like a crack to me...scape the paint off, at the LBS, and see! How long have you owned the frame?

I agree with a fiber under the paint and the fact that a crack wouldn't protrude like that. And a crack wouldn't be intermittent, like in the picture. Besides, I can't imagine a crack happening in that spot. Maybe running along the boss, or the leading end of the boss, but not there.

Cracks can "stick up" particularly if the paint is peeling. I think the best option is just to sand it down by hand with some super-fine grit paper. It looks suspicious to me because it's above the weld and crosses a bend in the material. All higher stress location.

The way that's formed, its not even lined up to be a crack. Its not in a stress area or directly facing the weld bead and can only spread onto thicker material. If there was enough stress to cause a crack like that it would more likely be up where the bolt hole is or to the right parallel to the weld bead.

    Exactly.

And craks don't stick up like that. Yes the paint can come up, but it will start to curl up and peel farther from the crack. Nothing like what is pictured.
