Best bike for about 500 bucks for city commuting...

    Hi all,

What do you guys and gals think is the best buy for about 500 bucks?

I want to go really fast in the city.

I've been thinking of some kind of cross bike that can go up and down curbs {gentle}, but with 700 size skinny tires...

    Any ideas?

Go to your local bike shop see what they have used or never picked up after work was done. Buy fenders, lock, and then you won't care when it gets stolen. Around here you can usually find a decent bike like I described for 125-200 well below you 500 limit. Cheers JK

I like the Jamis Commuter. Change the bars an your in business.

internal hub tranny and light weigt fenders make it a no brainer at $500 clams.

If you want to be all "hip and with it" with the cheap new fixxie buy a Giant Bowery. http://giant-bicycles.com/en-US/bike...yle/729/28462/ and then when people try to laugh at you for trying to be cool with your fixxie, just laugh at them for being so ignorant.

Specialized Sirrus looks good to me. its $550 MSRP.

Although its a bit more that what your are planning to spend.....the Specialized Crosstrail Expert (MSRP $770) is a very capable bike. It is more versatile than the Sirrus.....It may not be the perfect commuter....but one could commute and do some trail riding or touring on that bike.....

I really think the Kona Paddy wagon fits your style perfectly. If you like the SS thing, as I do. If the big ring is too big, you can always swap it out for a smaller one. MSRP is 650, which is quite a bit over your budget, but maybe you can find it cheaper. I couldn't.

Hmmm. single speed would be cool if there wernt any hills in my neighborhood....

I gotta BMX for my single speed thrills...

I don't like getting passed on the road..

Now, I'm commuting on an old rigid fat tire mountain bike. Its slow but can jump up and down curbs, go down stairs etc.

I'm hoping to find a 700 size skinny tire FAST bike that I can pretty much ride the same way as my mountain bike commuter...
