    Beginner - GT? Giant? Cannondale?

    Hi all.

I would like some advice, if you have any to offer.

I have a friend who is just starting to get into mountain biking. She is already a strong rider on her Panasonic touring bike (she's climbed some pretty steep hills, paniers and all!). But she is ready to buy a mountain bike now, and having a hard time trying to decide what - she has no idea what is out there or what is right for her. I have been trying to narrow it down for her, and even asked my more knowledgable boyfriend for some advice, but would like a bit more input.

So far, I have narrowed it down for her:

    GT Avalanche 2.0 (2005)
    Giant '05 Xtc850
my own used Cannondale CAAD4 f3000sl (upgraded to carbon fiber seatpost, handlebar, avid disc brakes)

She is 168 cm. (5 foot 6) tall, and light-weight. She also wouldn't be doing any rough trail-riding - some off-road rocky stuff and hopefully a little more once she has a better bike and I can convince her to give it a try. Her budget is about 500$. And (here's the tough part) we live in Japan! That narrows our choices a little as prices here are higher than in the US.

I have made my Cannondale a singlespeed, but would put the gears back on it for her.

    Thanks!

I appreciate your input - I wanted to be sure not to railroad her into buying my Cannondale. If it really is the best bike for the price (500$ or less), then I will encourage her to go for it.

In the end, it's her choice, but...

The Cannondale is good but a XTC is a great beginer bike and is a great race bike with only a few upgrades. As you can tell i am a Giant fan but if the Cannondale's new hardtails are nice too. I agree with going for a new F400
