    What's a Clydesdale?

People keep mentioning something called Clyde or Clydesdale, but I don't know if their talking about a bike brand or a kind of riding or a famous racer or what? I was just curious because I'm still getting used to mountain bike lingo. Thanks!

In cycling, a Clydesdale is a large, heavy, strong rider, usually anyone over 200 lb (roughly 90 kg).

The name comes from horses. Thoroughbreds are lightweights bred for racing, and Clydesdales are draft animals bred for pulling heavy loads.

Chucko's got it right....generally over 200 lb riders fit into the Clydesdale (or Clyde) category. I happen to be one of them at 6' 235 lbs.

The reason you see it mentioned is that it is the easiest way for a bigger rider to get the point across and get advice on bikes and components made to take the bigger loadings a Clyde can dish out without having to include thier size in every post... i.e. if someone says they're a Clyde and they want advice on cranks or something, you know that they are generally looking for the heavy duty gear.

The Clydesdale is a magnificent horse, recognized for its strength, style, and versatility.

I think my style would benefit from losing some more of the soft stuff...

Lots of racing rules stipulate that Clyde's are 225 lbs. minimum. Lot's of 200lb - 6 foot+ guys who's weight is proportionate to height.

Very true...if you're racing, you'll need to check the local classes.
