Lowers is the lower part that moves. Uppers is the upper part that is fixed to the frame.

Magnesium is light, so the casting for the lowers is sometimes made out of it to save weight.

... also, if you are stranded in the wilderness and it is getting cold, you can take out your knife and carve shavings out of the magnesium. A good spark will light it and get your camp fire started

Made of pure magnesium, or an alloy?

Things are very rarely made out of pure metals. Not even steel.

since steels are alloys of iron and carbon... there is by definition no such thing as pure steel.

but yeah, good sign that magnesium bike parts are alloys: they don't burst into flames when you scratch them. Has anyone ever managed to set fire to a fork lower?
