What bike am I looking for?

Fairly new to offroad, riding a Trek X Cal 6 29er. In my new research, I’ve found that upgrading this bike will likely be less efficient than getting a new bike. So I am trying to narrow down my search and I’ve been putting together a list of “wants” in a new bike. Budget will be $1500-2000.

Good brakes - I like touchy brakes, where barely pulling the lever gets my brakes engaged.

Fast shifting - I really like fast and predictable shifting.

29” wheels, However I dont have experience with plus sized tires. My current tires are 2.2/2.0

    Good/decent fork suspension, preferrably air

    Dropper post

And something that wont be insignificant jn 2 years and that can be upgraded easily as skill improves.

When you get to that price point in a hard tail, most if not all bikes will meet your criteria. Go test ride if you can.

Yeah I like promoting the bike I ride which seems to change quite regularly lol! In all honesty, I really do love the TJ because it's so versatile. The differences are mostly just drivetrain and wheel size. It comes down to your budget and how much you want to spend. If you want something that's in the middle with regards to drivetrain, go with an SLX build.

The bike can take either wheel size so you can pick up another wheel set if that floats your boat.

I have a Salsa Timberjack too and love it. It's a nice, affordable bike that can do everything pretty well. From climbing tech stuff, to hitting small to mid-sized jumps and drops, for the money I've spent on it, it's hard to beat. Always puts a smile on my face when I point it downhill.

I'm sure there are other brands with great hardtails in the same price point as well (ie. The Kona Honzo that Battery mentioned). I just got the TJ because the closest dealer to me had one on the floor that I could demo and their price and service was good.
