Can anyone give me a quick explanation of the different types of riding?

Well since you asked so politely...

    and nicely...

    1) XC= cross country, just riding the trails
    2) All mountain, just riding the trails but with more agression and perhaps more extreme trail conditions
    3) Free Ride, just riding the trails and sometimes not riding the trails but heading off into the great unknown to find even more extreme stuff to ride+
4)DH=downhill, usually found at ski mtns in the summer where you take a chair lift up and ride hard and fast down the mtn.

    1) a hardtail to perhaps 3"+ of rear travel(weight of bike 22lbs to 30lbs)
    2) full suspension starting around 4" of rear travel although lots of xc bikes have at least that amount of rear wheel travel now(25lbs to maybe 32lbs)
    3) 6" give or take of rear wheel travel(30 to 36lbs/give or take)
    4) 7+" of rear wheel travel(35lbs on up)

All of the immediately above are just ball park, but you get the idea. There are also single speed bikes and big hit front shock only bikes along with trial bikes.

Thanks Fred. I'm sure I'll have to read and re-read it a few times to remember it all. I appreciate all the info.
