    Troubleshooting

I need help figuring out what is wrong with my bike. Whenever I start pedaling with more force in my upper gears my chain will occasionally skip. My cranks will be loose for a split second until the chain clicks back in. It has only happened in my middle front ring (I've only really used this ring though) and the top 3 or so rings in the rear. Thanks for you help.

Worn chain or adjustments are needed.

Yes sounds like your derailleurs need adjustment. There is great how-to info with pictures on this site:

I'll look into that, I did try adjusting them last night. Just using the barrel adjusters. They appear lined up.

Sounds like a worn chain and cassette/freewheel.

The bike isn't that old, this years trek x-cal, I bought it used a couple days ago and it was claimed to be new in December and only riden about 6 times. I don't think the chain could be worn but I'll measure it.
