New question here. New Bike Help

Looking to purchase my first real mountain bike. Want some advice from real riders since there is so much "noise" out there.

    OK, first some info...

I'm a big guy, 6'2", 200 lbs but in good shape. Hurt my back a few years ago but it's been good for a while... and good or bad, i dont have much fear and like to go fast

Looking to spend around $1,000. - and yes, i'm gonna ride it before i buy it...

In Dallas, so we have Richardson Bike Mart and Performance Cycle if that helps at all...

Any advice would be greatly appreciated...

Lucky for you, it seems "Richardson bike Mart" has a slew of brands. For just under $1,000 take a look at the Rockhopper Expert 29 ($990). If you look more into 29'ers you will see that you might benefit from the larger wheel size.

I just bought my new ride at RBM about a month ago. Make it easy on yourself. Go in, tell them what you're looking to spend, and what type of riding you want to do and let them take it from there. I spent about 3 1/2 hours test riding browsing and drooling. The nice thing is, they have several competing major brands. You can't beat that when comparing.

    Good Luck,
I'm beginning to overcome my "momentum issues" but even that is happening slowly.

Do you have a spectrum outlet in Dallas?
I remember there's one in houston.

They stock the BD.com bikes. You could give those a once over as well.

OK, went way over budget (for me) but got a great bike. Plano Cycle had a 2009 on a smoking hot deal, and went with a loaded specialized epic dual suspension.
