    loose headset

I am trying to put a surly 29er fork on my 26 bike and whatever I do the fork seems loose. I have tried many things like putting more spacers, taking the wheel off, tighting the bolt on the starnut (before tightening the stem of course) but it seems impossible to make it tight. Is it possible the problem to be because of the longer fork? Or it could be a headset problem ( the headset is m-part brand and almost new)

if you're doing things right, then the longer fork will not cause the headset to be loose. You need a few mills of clearance to the top cap to adjust it properly. Loosen the stem up really far and try to adjust it again. If you can't tighten it enough, you need more spacers.

Compare the area where the steer tube meets the crown and the old fork and the new one. There is a race pressed onto the steer tube all the way down for the lower headset bearing to ride on. If the surly fork is brand new there probably isnt a race on it. They may be your problem.

I see, you mean a star nut. I installed one. I actually replaced the headset and there is again the noise, but after all I think it is not the headset's problem. When the wheel is off there isn't that play.

Ok, then we need some pictures. Something is wrong and unless you can hold it up to the internet so we can fix it for you, pictures or go to your shop.

Yep, it'll ride awful. But the headset should still work (until the bearings blow out).
