Iron horse 2009 MK3 what can you tell me

    Good day ladies and gentlemen.

I was wandering if any of you could give me some guidance on this bike.
Is it a good mountain bike?
Could I fit 29 wheels on it?
Should I just stick to getting a hardtail?

I had one of those, well actually three of those because the frame kept breaking. Nice design, poor execution.
Having said that, thereís a local guy who rides an old Sunday and does the highest jumps Iíve ever seen, 5-6m of vert and that thing just takes it

All the mk3's broke at the rear swingarm. They're underbuilt and always break.

The other models from IH at the time were beefy, but not the mk3.

and by the way, no, you cannot just put 29" wheels into an old 26er.

there's a bit of a compatibility list that you can follow as a rough guide, but specifics are always frame dependent.

For example, if you have a 26" fatbike (~4"-ish tires), it'll fit 27.5x3 or so, and 29x2.4 or so.

a bike that fits 29x3 will probably fit 27.5x4 or so.

An old 26er could fit a 29er wheelset, but only with road or maybe gravel tires. Certainly not mtb tires.

Generally speaking, though, it's not much worth doing with an older bike unless it's a really nice older bike.

I realize this topic is done already, but I still have an '08 MkIII. It's a good bike, but I only rode it for a year and gave it to my wife. I think mine endured because I replaced the rear wheel with a bolt-on to lend some rigidity to the rear triangle. I also made sure the shock had enough pressure to almost never bottom out. A lot of '08s broke in the swingarm. The '09s were an attempt to make the bike lighter, but unfortunately they just became noodly and no one liked them.
So good call on passing. If you happen to see an '08, though, check the swingarm. If it's not broken/repainted/welded, it's probably still a good bike.

It's never easier - you just go faster.

    I LOVED my 2008 MKIII.

Unfortunately....... yep, the rear triangle cracked. Also, even before it cracked, it was a bit of a noodle in the rear, even with a through bolt axle. And I had to replace the lower bearings every year. But I still loved that frame while it lasted.
15mm is a second-best solution to a problem that was already solved.
