Riding is the best way to start, if you have trouble with cardio, do some extra cardio work, if you have trouble with strength, endurance, then work on those areas.

Oh yeah, and ride then ride some more

    That's a good advice +rep for you

Riding solves a lot of issues like lack of stamina, saddle sore, various aches and pain

Yea, more time spent riding the better. Always good to cross train and do some jogging/running if you can too. I crossed from being a pretty avid runner to MTB. I thought I was in pretty good cardio shape, but the biking has really helped. It's awesome when I can get to ride and run on the same day!

If you have hills around you charge up those too. Sure it hurts, but you will get strong quick.

Ride about 5 hours/week (commuting can help alot).

When you ride be sure you spend at least half the time going easy....

Also be sure to spend about 1/4 of your time going really hard (intervals/hills etc)...

The other quarter is up to you...

Take at least one day off a week.

Have fun. The shape will come as a bonus.
Find yourself biking buddies in your area. You don't have to ride together all the time (or even at all), but keeping in touch with other bikers will be a source of inspiration for you.
