    Another noob needing advice

    Hey guys,

Looking to spend the income tax return on a good budget mountain bike. I've done lots of research on bikes in my price range (around 1200) and had it narrowed down to a couple, until today when steepandcheap.com put the Diamondback Mason up for 50 percent off! I'll be riding in Southeast Missouri, mostly single track trails (Berryman and Council Bluff for anyone familier). My question is, does anyone know if this would be a great bike for a beginner? I've read reviews of it and all, but I'm still just not sure, I'd like to hear from some experienced riders.

    Thanks

ps. sorry if there's a thread like this already, I did a search but didn't see one right off hand

Does that price range include the cost of gear or just the cost of the bike? I have just joined the forums as well and just purchased an Airborne Goblin Evo for $1,279 as my first bike. From what I have read around here and heard from other members, there isn't much that compares at that price point in regards to what you get with the Evo. Plus it is a sick looking bike if you are partial to blue!

I actually ended up finding a good deal on a trek x-caliber 8 that I purchased yesterday

The 9.3 has the same coil spring fork as the 8 but lesser Alivio 9sp drivetrain vs 10sp on the 8.
Trek has better geo with the 51mm offset fork vs 46mm, 69* head tube angle vs 70.5* and shorter 445mm chainstays vs 450mm.
I would put it just below an 8.
It would take you some riding time to notice this though.
The 9 has an air fork and better Shimano drive.
