    is 22T front chainring compatible with a 36T rear cassette?

    is 22T front chainring compatible with a 36T rear cassette?
    I have a Surly Trucker deluxe with S&S couplers. 26 inch wheels. Will there be any problem installing a Shimano 36T cassette on the back if I have 22T crankset on front?
    I have a long cage XT rear Deraileur coming in the mail. It says it is compatible wit 36T cassette.

    I've been running a 22/32 front with an 11-36 cassette and long cage derailleur for a few years without problem.
    Almost = Didn't

    Should be fine. Done it many times.

    I'd rather have it and not need it, than need it and not have it. Even if I don't normally use it, sometimes I go out on longer and harder rides and find myself looking for that bail out gear just so I can keep moving.

    I've got a 22/36 in front of an 11-36T on my do-all 29er. <18 gear inches is really low, but I can climb 40% grades and be able to stay seated for maximum traction. The only places I have to get off and walk are traction limited.

    It shouldn't be a problem but you may need to lengthen your chain if your current cassette is a 11/32 and you are switching to a 11/36. Your long cage will accommodate most any crankset and cassette combination but that means taking up slack it doesn't generate more links magically. Procedure to size a chain differs slightly for a hardtail and fs -- just google it.
