Construction work has begun for Pine Flat and Bootlegger campgrounds located in the upper portion of Oak Creek Canyon on the Red Rock Ranger District, Coconino National Forest.

Reconstruction of these popular recreation sites will ultimately better serve the public, provide natural resource protection and will provide needed facility upgrades. Access to Pine Flat and Bootlegger sites are currently closed until further notice. Sterling Springs access along 89A remains open to the public for water collection.

The Pine Flats campground reconstruction project will upgrade restrooms, provide accessibility, enhance walking paths, replace or provide new water hydrants, delineate camping and parking areas, provide new asphalt for roadways and improve the Sterling Spring box.

At Bootlegger, the campground facility is being redesigned for day use recreation (picnicking and trail access), overnight camping will no longer be available. Facility upgrades include restroom reconstruction, improved accessibility, designated trailhead parking, widening of the roadway, delineated picnic areas and site restoration.

These improvements are being implemented to meet Forest Service health and safety standards and to enhance public recreation.
