Strange things afoot at the Hawes Mine Loop...

Just got back from a good night loop on Hawes with a friend. We got to the top of the mine loop and began our decent when we came across something kinda freaky: about 15-20 trees were broken (not cut) and limbs were scattered across the trail. We got off the bikes and had a closer look. The ground and grass looked as if there had been a major downpour because all the vegetation was matted down and oriented downhill. But it was just in a concentrated area (does it rain in just a 1,000 sq ft area?), nowhere else. We thought perhaps a lightning strike, but nothing was charred. Meteor? No crater. Crashed plane? No plane. And no footprints besides our own. Strange. Any ideas?

...we did ride out of there pretty quick. We saw flashlights (not headlights) near the river briefly but I'm guessing it was unrelated? It could have been Mel Gibson and Joaquin Phoenix. I honestly can't come up w/ an explanation other than, well, never mind.

    I was thinking that too, but . . .

    not a cloud in the sky . . .

mystery solved . . . with all the fires going on around the state . . . waterdrop heli "missed the target" or took a practice shot . . .

seems like the most logical 'splan-ation

Easy, not aliens! Certain Swat teams are known to do heli ops around the Hawes. A heli on a low hover or a 1 skid op would matt down gras and break trees. Can be weird to see helis and dudes in black at night.

At least thats what the uni-mind instructs me to say.

The creep factor has been reduced

I think the water from the helicopter seems like the most logical. Although the guys in black rappeling from a helicopter is definitely the coolest.

Thanks guys -- I can face my demons again on Hawes.

Actually, they're everywhere. But because they are stealth (somehow they can hover 30 feet above a busy city block, Manhattan, for example, with no downwash or sound whatsoever) nobody notices until guys in black rappel down to take their subject. Happens all the time.
