South Mountain TT - Saturday May 10th

I know it's a road race and this is a MTB forum but I also know many of you, like me, ride both road and MTB plus this race affects the road and potential shuttling up the mountain. Also there are MTB categories! Come race up the road then ride down the trails back to the awards!

The South Mountain TT is scheduled for Saturday May 10, 2014. Expect the towers rd. to be closed until around noon.

If you'd like to register you can do so here - https://www.bikereg.com/Net/south-mountain-time-trial

New this year are the following:
    • Women's Cycling Association of Arizona (WoCAA) Race Series Qualifier
    • "World Team Climbing Championships" (race for yourself and points for your team)
    • Trophies for Team Champions, Overall Female, Overall Male
    • Over $1,000 in Prizes at our Awards Ceremony (must be present to win cash prizes!)
    • Prizes 3-deep in each category

We'd love to see you out there!

Question: If I do the road bike option, having never done a road race, do I go Cat 5 or Masters for my age group. Which one is more of a challenge?

Masters would probably have an assortment of all the different categories (so you could potentially be "racing" against some Cat 1-5 racers as well in your age group), while the Cat 5 group will solely be Cat 5 racers, but there might be some young bucks in there.

IMO, the Masters would be more of a challenge with tougher competition.

I believe that the USA Cycling answer is: Cat 5.

My understanding is that you cannot race Masters until you are a Cat 4 or
    above (Cat 3 for women.)

You could also check last year's results to get an idea of the times for each group - Team Vitesse - Cycling, Triathlon, Mountain Biking

It depends on the people organizing the race. They can elect to have a Masters Cat 5 category. The Tucson Bicycle Classic last year had that as an option (Men's 40+ cat 5).

ETA: From the flyer: Riders who do not have a USA Cycling license must buy a 1-day license when registering, but must race Category 5 (Men) or Category 4 (Women).
