    Picture Friday 8-26-11

I admit it - I have grown weary of PHX weather in August. To escape the sticky hot nastiness, I've been spending time in Flagstaff over the past few weekends - I feel like Elden is my home away from home. Last weekend, Turtlegirl and I entered the expert class of the Old Fashioned Mtn Bike Race. Not sporting the typical lycra kit, we were questioned at the starting line as to if we were in the right race. Yup! We were in it for the 30 grueling miles.... In fact, Miss Donna and her flat pedals got 2nd overall out of all the expert lady riders!!! I was proud to simply finish - not bad for someone who has ridden XC only 2 times since early July. The next day, we were treated to the most incredible trail conditions for some DH shuttlin delight. These pics are from my iPhone, NoelG, and Supermoto. Thanks to Noel and Carmen for the pixels...

Happy Ending at rocket speed requires limited contact between wheels and the wall Last weekend I tried HE in the rain. This weekend, HE on a nose wheelie. Gotta keep it on the edge!

nice stuff DG, and big congrats to Donna.

new bike... great on the downs, I'm struggling on the climbs with the tall fork and the short stem, hoping practice makes perfect, getting my weight so far forward on ups that the saddle is cornholing me is a new experience.

Last weekend was a great time to be in Flagstaff. Headed up Friday to meet some friends heading back to CA from CO, planned to ride that afternoon but it looked like this.

So we rode some bar stools at Beaver St Brewing.

    Saturday dawned bright and tacky.

No issues with other trail users all weekend, which is to be expected as I dress to impress.

Sunday afternoon did a solo ride after my friends hit the road.

Won't take long and you'll be comfortable with the cornholeing. Kidding. Takes a little different technique to climb on a 'Bird, but once you figure it out, you'll like it. For me, I tend to "hover" just off the seat for short quick climbs. Longer climbs, I just plant my ass and lean forward. Also, I run a 26 tooth small ring, otherwise the gearing is too "spinny" for me. Food for thought.

Headed up to Flag tomorrow, maybe check out some AZT over by Aspen Corner & Hart Prairie, maybe some Schultz. Definitely getting out of the heat for a day.

    some more AZ trail

Yesterday, Mrs. Rockman and I and friend and two 12 year olds and shuttled to FS418 and rode AZ trail back to town. 18 miles or so. The relatively new section was already a crowd pleaser but the newest bit from the tank down to Snowbowl Rd does the trick as well. Some really fine trail building with some impressive crib work. We got caught in the rain but the new section shed the water really well. Kudos to the trail builders, ACE I believe and whomever else!

If anyone is into trees the southwestern white pines along this side of the Peaks are very interesting. There's some huge ones in the forest but where it's open the mature trees are much smaller. They could be Limber Pine. I'm not exactly sure how to tell them apart.
