    Pembertom moonlight ride report

Well my friend(Mark), his wife(Star), and I decided rain or shine we were hitting the last Pemberton night ride of the year. Thanks to a headlamp graciously lent by SuLing the three of us were all set. Thanks to two of the three of us leaving shoes in the garage we were a bit delayed getting to the trailhead. There was rain and lightning all around, but nothing over the park. The trails started out wet and well packed, but about the four mile mark it turned pretty lousy. Thetrail turned into this sand/mud mix that packed up my tires pretty fast and suddenly made the 32:18 that is normally to low for Pemberton suddenly seemed a bit on the high side. About the midway point it started to rain lightly, but the temp was absolutely perfect. Not long after the rain started Star had a bit of a run in with a ocotillo and so we had to stop for a couple of minutes. By the time we reached the service road, my light that I thought had a full charge started to fade. Star's light(SuLing's) gave out at the end of the service road, and Mark's died when we crossed the pavement. We got back to the lot at ten sharp, we were the last ones out. Since we we're all accounted for they could call off the the sheriff's department. According to my GPS we did the route in a blistering 2:13, my slowest Pamberton time yet.

I was wondering if the ride went off, watching the light show on the other side of the McDowell's. The south side of Pemberton, where the rocks and red dirt are, is misery when it's wet because that stuff just sticks and packs up...

It was a great ride - Perfect weather! The weather scared away most people, but they missed out. I wish the park would do more of these night rides and add the competitive loops to the mix.
