    OT-Nogales Dentist?

Will be in Tucson end of Feb to do some riding, and have been checking out getting some dental work done in Nogales. There are many to choose from, so am hoping for a recommend. Anyone have any experience with Nogales dentists - both good and bad?

    Thanks,

    Craig

Dental work is not subject to the substitution effect.

If you are looking at cross border dentistry, I’ve got to do my part to at least and explain the risks.

    Let’s start with infection control:

From a talk presented by Arizona Dental Assoc a few months ago, I learned that the same water you are discouraged from drinking is often used during procedures. Do a google search on Typhoid, TB, Shigellosis, and Amebiais, and you learn this is in the water and it runs rampant in Mexico.

Prolly less than 25% of the Dentists in Mexico are vaccinated against Hep B. I bring this up because infection control standards during clean up are usually non-existent. Hep B and C is present in blood and other infectious materials.

Now let’s move to medical materials:

Counterfeit and other inferior materials are frequently used, which can fail or potentially cause other health hazards. I can't remember the exact number, but something like 70% of all pharmaceutical and medical supplies are counterfeit.

Education and Qualifications of the Dentists:

Mexico has no certified list of Board approved doctors. It is pretty easy for a Dentist to claim they were trained in the U.S., but backing that up is different story. Now if they are trained in Mexico, let me just say that you can go straight from high school to Dental School.

If something goes wrong you have absolutely no regulatory protection or recourse. I’m talking from getting an improperly fitted crown to a major medical foul up. Major medical issues frequently become our problem here in the valley, as people with not just messed up mouths, but whole faces require invasive work.

Just forsake the dentist, cross the train tracks and eat at La Roca, best shrimp and margaritas you'll ever have, and it's a beautiful restaurant, a gem in the slums

    Craig,

I had dentist work down in Mexico while I was living there, they do some good stuff. I will ask one of my students for some recommendations (her and her family have a family dentist in Nogales). If you go on a weekend, I'd go with you to hit up some of the single track on the Arizona side.

Did you decide on the exact dates of when you are going to be here in Tucson? Want to do an epic ride?

    Excellent Experiences

Dr Francisco Javier Tapia, more advanced than any dentist I've visited in the states. He fixed the things the 'specialist in chicago' did to ME's teeth, and fixed mine. When we started going to him, ME's relatives were spooked, now, they all go. Javier is a friend (taught him Photoshop basics en espaņol)

Dr Moreno is an orthodontist - mine, in fact!!!

He used to ride bikes, too. He is a great guy. He and Javier (Tapia) are in the same building.

    Thanks for the replies

We have spent a lot of time in Mexico and have had a great deal of dental work done over the years - and it has been superb. I know there are shabby dentists and doctors everywhere, that is why I am looking for recommendations as I have in the past. I'll check out the ones you have mentioned, and if any others have a recommendation I'd appreciate it.

Chad - we are hoping to head south next week. I'll send you an email with more info, and yes - would love to do an epic ride.
