Canyon Lake is awesome. In fact, that entire drive along AZ-88 is one of my favorite things to do when I have visitors come to town.

Does this mean no more Hawes or BCT ride reports? lol j/k those are some great pictures. I've been toying around with the idea of picking up a kayak but don't have the space for one at the moment. I may have to try out a rental or a kayak tour. Keep those bike/kayak reports coming

Thanks for the inspiration. I've been meaning to get out to Canyon lake on my 2 1/2 seater inflatable whitewater Kayak, which we abuse as a Canoe.

I had a kayak before I moved to AZ. Sold it the week before I left. I told myself "There is NO reason to have a kayak in the desert." I miss my kayak...

whoa, nice boat, it'll prolly track a little better.

Double whoa, where'd the sheep come from? Are they around the lake?

I haven't figured out the cove name for the first one I came to, but it's about a 10 or 15 minute paddle up from Beer Can Point (dock and campground), then about 5 minutes up from there is Crucifix Canyon, and then prolly the one you are talking about is Blue Tank Canyon. Its about 20-30 minutes up from Crucifix; about 2/3rds the way up the lake.

Here's map of the lake, that describes the what I'm talking about.

after the prior days BCT ride, I didn't wanna totally waste myself, so turned around a little ways past Blue Tank.

Yeppers, and my boat doesn't handle very well empty. I feels much more stable when loaded down.

At 7:00 am when I started my paddle, it was calm, but I got a little worked on my paddle back in as powerboat traffic picked up. I try to stay outta the traffic, which means that I'm usually close to the cliff walls, so when a big boat rolls threw I get a double whammy because the wake bounces off the wall. You won't catch me out there on the weekend, been there done that and it just aint enjoyable.

Thanks for posting the Video Sam, very cool lake to kayak, lots of nooks to explore. I used to enjoy a slow ride on my jet ski into some of those alcoves, and caves when the water was at the right level...rode into a cave one time, ducking my head down...looked up and the ceiling was covered with Tarantula spiders, that was so cool!

thanks 4 the map u2. i've been to CL twice but have not gone past mushroom point. next time i'll skip first water and head upriver further. the longhorn were taken at saguaro lake.

i do like this boat; it tracks and glides better. even i as a total noob noticed! i also bought a roof rack for the car and proper saddles. the first gittup with foam "saddles" was a joke but it was the only way to bring it home.

@tim: boats are "supposed" to slow down when they see kayaks but some don't. since they're usually further away, by the time the rollers reach us they're not too bad but actually kind'a fun. of course i have not gone - nor do i ever plan to go - on a weekend!

How hard is it to get back in if you get tipped dover in the middle of the lake? I've never floated in such a canoe but it looks like fun. Me thinks a fat dude like me would have a heck of time getting back in the canoe if tipped.
