November 13-15: Cave Creek Bicycle Festival

hello to all the arizona cyclists!

exciting event scheduled for the 13th-15th of november, the cave creek bicycle festival. the website explains it all so i won't go into to much detail on it here. unique event for the area which includes a difficult mountain bike race, passport road ride, and a ride-in movie theater. the cost is great because it includes food, fun, racing, and of course conservation of land. the whole weekend should be ideal for the whole family! check out the website for all additional info and registration, and email or call me if you have any questions. like any other event we need racers, volunteers, sponsors and venders so please contact me soon!

Awesome news -- another bike festival! We'll make a sticky for it when it gets closer. Maybe Octoberish?

phillbo everyone mass starts at 10 am. police escort to dirt on spur cross road, neutral start. as soon as we hit dirt it is a race for the top 30 i am sure, but all others can take their time! lunch and beer is served to all participants after mtb race/ride until awards at 4pm or so. its up to the rider to decide the pace they can handle. we preride the course every sunday from the flat tire bike shop by the way. i guess the quick answer would be both!

yo tom there might be other things happening at the same time, it is busy during "season" up here. but this is an independent event set to benifit the desert foothills land trust, to help purchase land that we actually ride on during the mtb race! can't wait o kill duo at the old pueblo with you, no more second!

Great riding area, ready to go

These trails are a fun ride and a beautiful Sonoran desert area. Funds raised spent buying and preserving this land for all mtn bikers is a great cause. Should be a great event. Thanks to Kaolin and Flat Tire Bike Shop for the effort.

Do you really pre-ride the route "every" Sunday or should I call the shop to verify first? What time does the ride start?

    Pre rides

Si, (Bike)Muchacho. Todos los Sabados....or almost. Summer and heat have been known to dampen the enthusiasm for a ride, but we still get out once in a while.

Flat Tire leads a group ride on Sundays from their shop in Cave Creek on these trails. Kaolin has to ride with his eyes closed to make it fair for the rest of us. My son and I ride frequently, and a group of others join in too. Nice ride, diverse group of riders and they haven't left me at the side of the road yet.

Call Flat Tire on Saturday and ask if they are riding. Usually leave early, like 7 in the summer and push back to 8:00 in the winter.

Trails are great so get out there with us on a Sunday before the festival. They are not all fully marked so a guide (Kaolin) on the first ride is best.

    see you at the festival,
    Jeff from Cave Creek

    single-speeds only award

i am working on some very cool awards for the top finishers of the mtb race and just wanted to let out one idea to everyone. to borrow a great idea from the single-speed world championships the first single-speed rider to finish will receive a tattoo from crazy horse tattoo up here in cave creek. the tattoo will be done promptly after the finish so the honored rider will be able to show it off at the raffle/awards/ride-in-movie. just like the sswc, don't want the tattoo, don't win the race!!

don't worry we have attack dogs that will clean the course and provide plenty of incentive not to be dfl.......i remember playing that "game" when i was a kid, the only rule was just don't be last!!

    mtb lap times

everything is going well with the event planning! just wanted to post some "fastest" lap times for the mtb course.

geared front suspension 29ner- 1h27min!! wow sam!!
    single speed rigid 29ner- 1h37min

keep in mind this is done with an average speed of 12 miles per hour on spur cross road before it turns to dirt. this ensures accurate times for race day with the police escort/neutral rollout.

Yah, the late start got us some good heat there at the end. The water at the park was no where near cold either; but down right HOT. I don't know why I was expecting refreshing water to come out of a spigot in the middle of the desert, but a girl can dream!

I'm up for another go at it next Sunday. The climb up, what is it, Elephant mtn, is great. It reminds me of the BCT climb, but a tad bit shorter.

not the easiest route to navigate right now. i am thinking about marking the course with tape tomorrow so i will let you know if that works out. can you ride on sunday morning with us, that's the best way to get to know the course. others are wanting a saturday pre-ride which i think will happen this week.....more on that soon!!

The Mountain Bike Course is now flagged with GREEN ribbon. As a heads up, as you are heading South out of Spur Cross you will come to a barbed wire gate in which you'll have to open, at this point hang a sharp RIGHT, now heading West, and follow the dirt road for quite a while...

    course marking

hello again. i got back from the ride the rez event and couldn't possibly stay off the bike this morning. the mtb course is fully marked from the spur cross main trail to the climb up the backside of surrey road. just follow the green marking ribbon that is located on signs and/or trees. some one else has some sporadic pink and orange ribbon along the course, so make sure to follow the green ribbon to stay on the official course. should be easy to follow until someone takes them down, which would be stupid since we are helping the future preservation of the area with our event.

also, the event website still shows the mtb race finishing on the back roads south of downtown cave creek, which is inaccurate. the race concludes by riding east on surrey rd and making a left hand turn (north) onto cave creek road. the finish is on cave creek road directly in front of frontier village.

can't wait for this to actually happen.....

    yo francesco,

dont apologize for you your "bad english" as it is better than my non-existent itailian. there is actually a trek/fisher demo going on for the festival on the 14th, so we can get you on a bike pretty easily. how tall are you, do you like hardtails, and how do you feel about 29ers?

the terrain up here in the creek is cross country, loose and rocky, with quite a bit of climbing! glad we will see you out here.....

Trek will supply you with a map and some information of the area, you choose where to ride the demo. The mountain bike demo is in the parking lot of Spur Cross Conservation Ranch.

    News Article

Nice article on the festival in our little local Sonoran News. Had a picture of some unknown (unnamed in article at least) rider on the course. Nice press. Too bad they didn't list the famous rider out posing for the camera. Maybe I can get an autograph.

At least they finally mentioned Flat Tire Bike Shop in the last paragraph. Thanks to Kaolin and the Flat Tire crew for all the hard work and promotion of this event. Good cause and good tradition to start in Cave Creek.

Looking forward to the ride and festivities...

Wow what a nice looking ride. Thanks for posting those pics. My only "real" single track training so far have been the west portion of Trail 100, but then again my goal is to just finish .

Looking forward to it. See you guys there.

Signed up ready to go, but never ridden it before. Any insights from those of you who have ridden the course? How does the route layout? Technical sections? Tough Climbs? Areas to watch out for? Areas you can open it up a little? Knowing what's coming up around the next bend is always helpful!

    trail recon

Nice climbs (2 or 3) on good trail surface. I know, I always have a good view from the back of the pack going up. Sometimes I enjoy the scenery so much I'll actually stop and soak it in mid-climb.

Downhills have some rocky areas, but nothing I would call "technical". A bit of jeep road with a touch of sand, again nothing bad or difficult. Overall a really fun ride that exemplifies mountain biking in AZ without the ledges and more technical stuff. Most don't believe the open desert is right there on the edge of Cave Creek, which is why preserving more of the land is so important. I am all for development and progress (I work in construction) but some areas just need to be set aside.

    See you there.

Big mountain bike announcement: mountain bike Hall of Famer Nat Ross will be on hand Saturday during the Festival. He's going to ride in the mountain bike race/ride and will be speaking sometime during the day. Who thinks they can show him a thing or two.

A couple of us are riding it tomorrow...but maybe a little later than the 7 am group. Maybe 8-9....let me know if you are interested. We usually take it easy at a more "casual" pace.

That would be sweeeet, also if they were at the bike shop that would be even better.
Tiff we're not sure exactly where we're staying yet, something about the center of CC is open for camping, but I don't know where the "center of CC is". So I'm driving to the Flat Tire bike shop on Friday right around closing hoping to get some directions. Maybe someone here could throw up a goog map pointing out the "Center of town" for me.

    Don't forget the rim Tiff.

    packet pickup

hey guys the race packets can be picked up on friday from 3-7pm at the flat tire bike shop. you can also pick them up in the morning on saturday if you want. the camping in the "center of cave creek" is pretty crazy. it is the dirt lot on the north/west corner of cave creek rd and schoolhouse rd, dierctly behind the post office. it is just a huge open lot that is a five second walk/ride from the event at frontier town.

call for if you have any questions at all 602-432-6023

This ride was a blast! I will definitely be doing it again next year. Trail was a little soft in some areas, but overall a great course. That first climb was brutal for not having ridden the course before.

Yes, that 1st climb is a butt kicker if you're not expecting it.

The event was a really fun time! Thanks to the volunteers on the last climb of the day before the road cheering us on!

I'll definitely be signed up for next year!!

    Great time!

Thanks to everyone who organized this event. Had a blast. It's great you could raise some funding, some awareness and bring a bike event to Cave Creek at the same time. I'm looking forward to it next year!
