need bike recommendation - hardtail for xterra

    Hello All,

My buddy is a clyde who is looking for a hardtail that flexes less than his current ride (a trek I think, I can't remember which one).

    Here are his criteria:
    Strong
    Light-ish if possible
    The cheaper the better

    Any recommendations?

I'm an average-sized girl, so I don't have many recommendations on bikes for the guys. But I'm an avid XTERRA racer. Just keep in mind there's a run after the bike portion, and since he's a runner he'll want his legs to not be too beat up after the bike. When I was a beginner, I did my first few XTERRA seasons on a hardtail. After that I moved up to an XC FS and that made a big difference in how my legs felt for the run. But by then I was more competitive too. So he shouldn't be too surprised if he upgrades later. My husband is a clyde and relays the XTERRAs with a friend of mine (he does the bike while she swims and runs). He recently moved up to a FS 29er and loves it over the heavy freeride hardtail he was riding before.

Is your friend in AZ? If there are any more questions about XTERRA, just let me know and I'll be happy to tell ya what I know.

Azonic steelhead. You can beat the hell out of it and it wont break. Ok not anywhere near light but it is steel and the weight will help his training. And the frames do come pretty cheap about $150-200 new. Used is even better eh hem say for example mine for sale. Also know of a Kona Firemountain that is cheap $400 ish complete. Not too sure about flex as I didn't ride it.

    Also Santa Cruz Jackal.

I did my first, and only so far, XTERRA last year in Show Low, and I plan to do it again. The reason why I decided to race the XTERRA was because I bought a Gary Fisher X-Cal in Jan, '08 and rode it to the peak of my own personal fitness. I first have to say, get on a 29er - they are perfect for Clyde's (like myself), and they are fast. Second, I have to say get on a Fisher - the lifetime warranty on the frames is awesome, and the superfly is great. Otherwise, maybe a Niner Air 9. I am building up a 29er XC/AM FS, but I still plan to use the X-Cal in most of my races - the hardtail is a better climb, and hauls ass on the forest roads.

I plan to start my training in a few months, right now, I am just racing my MTN bike.
